미 국방부는 미한 연합훈련인 을지프리덤실드가 미한 연합군의 준비태세와 역내 안보 강화에 매우 중요하다고 강조했습니다. 중국과 러시아가 한반도 주변에서 연합훈련을 실시하는 것과 관련해선 ‘주시’할 것이라는 입장을 밝혔습니다. 조상진 기자가 보도합니다.
패트릭 라이더 미 국방부 대변인은 31일 정례 브리핑에서 미한 연합훈련 을지프리덤실드(UFS)와 관련해 “우리 군이 긴밀히 협력할 수 있고, 필요할 경우 한국, 역내 동맹과 파트너를 방어하며 싸울 수 있는 준비를 갖추도록 보장한다는 측면에서 여전히 중요하다”고 강조했습니다.
[녹취: 라이더 대변인] “What I would tell you is that these exercises do remain important in terms of ensuring that our militaries can closely work together and be prepared to fight and defend the Republic of Korea and our partners and allies in the region should they need to.”
라이더 대변인은 이어 “이번 훈련은 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션에 기반한 11일 간의 방어 위주의 훈련”이라며 “실제로 미한 연합방위태세를 향상시키고 준비태세를 유지하며 한반도와 동북아의 안보와 안정을 강화하기 위해 고안된 것”이라고 설명했습니다.
[녹취: 라이더 대변인] “This is an 11 day computer simulated defense oriented training event which is really designed to enhance ROK and US combined defense posture helped maintain rate in readiness and strengthen the security and the stability on the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia.
라이더 대변인은 최근 러시아와 중국군이 한반도 주변에서 연합군사훈련을 실시하고 러시아 군용기가 한국의 방공식별구역(KADIZ·카디즈)에 침범한 데 대한 입장을 묻는 질문에는 “주시할 것”이라고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 라이더 대변인] “Well, certainly, it is the right of all militaries and all nations that have militaries to conduct exercises our own military obviously conducts exercises. It's certainly something that will keep an eye on given the nature of those nations and in some cases, the instability that they are seeking to cause in various regions of the world. But again, not surprising, but something we'll keep an eye on.”
라이더 대변인은 군사 훈련이 모든 군대와 국가의 권리라며, 미군도 분명히 훈련을 실시하고 있다고 말했습니다.
이어 “이러한 국가들의 성격과 일부 경우 그들이 세계의 다양한 지역에서 야기하는 불안정성을 감안할 때 (그런 훈련은) 확실히 주시해야 할 것”이라며 “놀라운 일은 아니지만 계속 주시할 것”이라고 덧붙였습니다.
라이더 대변인은 또한 중국이 인도태평양 지역에서 전투기와 전함을 동원해 위협적 행보를 보이는 데 대해서는 “중국이 역내에서 용인되는 정도의 정상적 행동의 측면에서 현상을 변경하려 시도했던 것으로 평가한다”고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 라이더 대변인] “We assess that really what China was trying to do here was change the status quo in terms of what is acceptable normal behavior in that region. Our focus is working with our allies and our partners in the region to ensure stability and to preserve the international rules based order that has largely kept the peace for over seventy years since World War Two, in terms of individual actions by individual Chinese aircraft or ships.”
그러면서 “우리는 2차 세계대전 이후 70년 동안 대체로 평화를 유지해 온 규칙에 기반한 국제 질서를 보존하고 안정을 보장하기 위해 역내 동맹국과 파트너 국가들과 함께 협력하는데 초점을 맞추고 있다”고 강조했습니다.
