미국 정부는 북한이 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM)로 추정되는 장거리 탄도미사일을 발사한 데 대해 강력한 규탄 입장을 밝혔습니다. 백악관은 북한이 유엔 안보리 결의를 뻔뻔하게 위반하며 역내 안보를 위태롭게 한다고 지적했고, 국무부는 이번 발사가 역내 전체에 미치는 위협을 보여준다며 추가 도발을 자제할 것을 북한에 촉구했습니다. 조상진 기자가 보도합니다.
백악관은 24일 북한이 동해상으로 장거리 탄도미사일을 발사한 지 약 4시간 만에 신속하게 이를 강력히 규탄하는 성명을 발표했습니다.
[젠 사키 백악관 대변인] "The United States strongly condemns the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) for its test of a long-range ballistic missile. On March 10th, the United States Government publicly released information that the DPRK’s tests on February 26 and March 4, 2022 EST involved an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) system. We noted that there would likely be further tests in the future."
백악관은 이날 젠 사키 대변인 명의로 발표한 성명에서 “미국은 북한의 장거리 탄도미사일 시험을 강력히 규탄한다”고 밝혔습니다.
이어 “지난 3월 10일 미국 정부는 미국 동부시간 기준 2월 26일과 3월 4일에 실시된 북한의 시험이 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM) 시스템과 관련된 것이었다는 정보를 공개했다”며, “우리는 북한이 앞으로 추가 시험을 할 수 있다고 지적했다” 덧붙였습니다.
사키 대변인은 “대통령과 그의 국가안보팀이 동맹, 파트너와 긴밀히 조율하며 현재 상황을 평가하고 있다”고 전했습니다.
그러면서 “이번 발사는 다수의 유엔 안전보장이사회 결의를 뻔뻔하게 위반하는 것이며, 불필요하게 긴장을 끌어올리고 역내 안보 상황을 불안정하고 위태롭게 한다”고 지적했습니다.
[젠 사키 백악관 대변인] "This launch is a brazen violation of multiple UN Security Council resolutions and needlessly raises tensions and risks destabilizing the security situation in the region. This action demonstrates that the DPRK continues to prioritize its weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs over the well-being of its people. We urge all countries to hold the DPRK accountable for such violations and call on the DPRK to come to the table for serious negotiations."
사키 대변인은 “이런 행동은 북한이 주민의 안녕보다 대량살상무기(WMD)와 탄도미사일 프로그램을 계속 우선시하고 있음을 보여준다”고 비판했습니다.
이어 “우리는 모든 나라가 이러한 위반에 대해 북한에 책임을 물을 것을 권고하고, 북한이 진지한 협상을 위해 협상 테이블에 나올 것을 촉구한다”고 밝혔습니다.
또 “외교의 문은 닫히지 않았지만, 평양은 불안정을 초래하는 행동을 즉각 중단해야 한다”며, “미국은 미국 본토와 한국, 그리고 일본 동맹의 안전을 보장하기 위해 필요한 모든 조치를 취할 것”이라고 강조했습니다.

국무부도 성명을 통해 북한의 장거리 탄도미사일 시험 발사를 강력히 규탄했습니다.
국무부는 이날 네드 프라이스 대변인 명의의 성명을 통해 “이번 발사는 최소한 2차례의 ICBM 시험을 비롯해 긴장을 고조시키는 북한의 올해 다른 시험들과 마찬가지로 유엔 안보리 결의에 명백히 위배된다”고 지적했습니다.
[네드 프라이스 미 국무부 대변인] “The U.S. condemns the DPRK’s ballistic missile launch. Like the DPRK’s other escalatory tests this year, including at least two intercontinental ballistic missiles, this launch is a clear violation of multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions, and demonstrates the threat the DPRK’s unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs pose to the DPRK’s neighbors and the region as a whole.”
또 “이번 발사는 북한의 불법 대량살상무기와 탄도미사일 프로그램이 북한의 이웃 나라들과 역내 전체에 미치는 위협을 보여준다”고 비판했습니다.
이어 “우리는 국제사회와 함께 북한이 추가 도발을 자제하고 지속적이고 실질적인 대화에 관여할 것을 촉구한다”고 말했습니다.
[네드 프라이스 미 국무부 대변인] “We stand with the international community to call on the DPRK to refrain from further provocations and engage in sustained and substantive dialogue. Our commitment to the defense of the Republic of Korea and Japan remains ironclad. We have been and will continue to coordinate closely with our allies and partners to address the threats posed by the DPRK and to advance our shared objective of the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”
프라이스 대변인은 “한국과 일본을 방어하겠다는 우리의 의지는 여전히 철통같다”며 “우리는 북한의 위협에 대처하고 한반도의 완전한 비핵화라는 공동의 목표를 진전시키기 위해 동맹, 파트너와 긴밀히 협력해 왔으며 앞으로도 그럴 것”이라고 강조했습니다.
미국 인도태평양사령부도 이날 성명을 통해 북한의 탄도미사일 발사를 인지하고 있으며, 이와 관련해 한국과 일본을 비롯한 동맹, 파트너 국가들과 긴밀히 협의하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
[인도태평양사령부 성명] “We are aware of the DPRK's ballistic missile launch today and are consulting closely with the Republic of Korea (ROK) and Japan, as well as other allies and partners. The United States condemns these actions and calls on the DPRK to refrain from further destabilizing acts. While we have assessed that this event does not pose an immediate threat to U.S. personnel, territory, or that of our allies, we will continue to monitor the situation closely. The United States remains prepared to defend the US homeland and our allies. The U.S. commitment to the defense of the ROK and Japan, remains ironclad.”
이어 “미국은 이러한 북한의 행동을 규탄하고 더 이상 불안정을 초래하는 행동을 자제할 것을 촉구한다”면서, “이번 발사가 미군과 미국 영토, 또는 동맹국에 즉각적인 위협이 되지 않는다고 평가하지만 상황을 계속 면밀히 주시할 것”이라고 밝혔습니다.
그러면서 “미국은 미국 본토와 동맹국을 방어할 준비가 돼 있으며, 한국과 일본 방위에 대한 미국의 공약은 철통같다”고 강조했습니다.
