미국을 방문 중인 한국 국가안보실장이 미 국무장관과 백악관 국가안보보좌관을 각각 만나 윤석열 대통령의 미국 국빈 방문 준비 사항을 논의했습니다. 미 국무장관과 백악관 보좌관은 한국에 대한 철통 같은 방위 공약을 확인하고 한국과 일본의 최근 역사 문제 해법 발표를 환영했습니다. 조은정 기자가 보도합니다.
제이크 설리번 백악관 국가안보보좌관이 7일 김성한 한국 국가안보실장을 만나 윤석열 대통령의 다음 달 미국 국빈 방문과 양국 현안을 논의했습니다.
백악관은 이날 보도자료에서 두 보좌관이 “미한동맹 70주년을 기념하고 미한 동맹의 정치, 경제, 안보와 인적 유대를 심화하기 위한 윤석열 대통령과 영부인 김건희 여사의 국빈 방문 준비 사항을 논의했다”고 밝혔습니다.
[백악관] “They discussed preparations for the upcoming State Visit by ROK President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee on April 26, 2023 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-ROK alliance and deepen U.S.-ROK political, economic, security, and people-to-people ties.”
설리번 보좌관은 이 자리에서 한국 정부가 강제징용 배상 해법을 발표한 것을 높이 평가하며 한일 관계 개선에 대한 기대감도 나타냈습니다.
[백악관] “Mr. Sullivan also welcomed news of the historic breakthrough between the ROK and Japan to resolve historical issues and open the door to increased cooperation between these two key allies.”
백악관은 “설리번 보좌관이 한국과 일본이 역사 문제를 해결하기 위한 역사적인 돌파구를 마련하고 미국의 두 핵심 동맹이 협력을 강화할 문을 연 것을 환영했다”고 전했습니다.
두 보좌관은 인도태평양 지역에서 변화하는 위협에 대응하기 위해 안보 협력을 강화하고 긴밀히 협력하는 방안도 논의했습니다.
[백악관] “The two discussed how to maintain close cooperation to further enhance our security ties to respond to the changing threat environment in the Indo-Pacific region. Mr. Sullivan reiterated the United States’ ironclad commitment to the security of the ROK and the region and to providing extended deterrence through the full range of U.S. defense capabilities. The two condemned the Democratic People's Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) continued destabilizing activity and highlighted the need for the international community, including our allies and partners at the United Nations, to limit the DPRK’s ability to advance its unlawful WMD program that threatens regional stability.”
“설리번 보좌관은 한국과 역내 안보에 대한 미국의 철통 같은 공약과 모든 범주의 미국 방위 역량을 동원해 확장억제를 제공하겠다는 의지를 확인했다”고 백악관은 전했습니다.
양측은 또 북한의 지속적인 불안정을 초래하는 행위를 규탄했습니다.
아울러 유엔의 동맹과 파트너를 포함한 국제사회가 지역 안보를 위협하는 북한의 불법적인 대량살상무기 개발을 저지하는 데 동참해야 한다고 강조했습니다.
또 국제 평화와 안정을 진전하기 위한 공통의 노력도 논의했습니다.
[백악관] “They also spoke about the growing necessity for concerted efforts to advance peace and stability globally. They condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine and discussed the pressing need to continue to supply assistance to the Ukrainian people. They also emphasized continued cooperation to advance and protect our countries’ technology leadership, respond to economic coercion, and address vulnerabilities in supply chains, telecommunications infrastructure, and cyber networks to ensure the continued prosperity of our allies and partners.“
두 보좌관은 “러시아의 우크라이나 침공을 규탄하고 우크라이나 국민들에게 계속해서 원조를 제공해야 하는 긴급한 필요성에 대해 논의했다”고 백악관은 전했습니다.
또 동맹과 협력국의 지속적인 번영을 위해 양국의 기술적 우위를 보호하고 진전시키는 것을 비롯해 경제적 강압에 대응하고, 공급망 문제와 사이버 네트워크의 취약성에 대처하는 데에도 지속적으로 협력하기로 했습니다.
한편 네드 프라이스 국무부 대변인은 이날 정례브리핑에서 김성한 한국 국가안보실장과 토니 블링컨 미 국무장관이 전날 매우 생산적인 만남을 가졌다고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 프라이스 대변인] “It was a very productive meeting that the secretary had with ROK NSA Kim Sung-han yesterday. We issued a readout after that meeting. But as we said the secretary heartily welcomes the announcement that bilateral discussions between the ROK and Japan to resolve sensitive historical issues had concluded. In addition, the secretary and the national security adviser discussed how both countries can further support, can further offer our support to Ukraine and to boost our collective economic security. And the secretary assured the national security adviser the United States’ ironclad commitment to the defense of the ROK, and they also noted how much they look forward to the state visit that was announced by the White House today of President Yoon to the White House in April.”
프라이스 대변인은 “민감한 역사 문제를 해결하기 위한 한일간 양자 논의가 종료됐다는 발표를 블링컨 장관이 진심으로 환영했다”고 전했습니다.
이어 “블링컨 장관과 김 실장은 양국이 우크라이나를 추가적으로 지원하는 문제와 양국의 경제 안보를 강화하는 방안을 논의했다”고 말했습니다.
또 블링컨 장관이 한국의 방위에 대한 미국의 철통같은 약속을 확인했으며, 양측이 윤석열 대통령의 국빈 방문을 논의했다고 프라이스 대변인은 전했습니다.
