북대서양조약기구가 군사위원장의 한국 방문을 계기로 북한 핵 문제에 대한 입장을 밝혔습니다. 한반도의 완전하고 검증가능하며 되돌릴 수 없는 비핵화를 지지한다며 국제사회는 대북압박을 유지해야 한다고 촉구했습니다. 안소영 기자입니다.
북대서양조약기구(NATO·나토)는 13일 북한이 비핵화를 이행하도록 설득하기 위해 국제사회와 긴밀히 협력하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
[나토 대변인]” NATO is very much working with the international community to convince North Korea to adhere to the denuclearization. We understand this is a concern for South Korea and more nations. NATO fully supports the goal of complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. NATO calls upon North Korea to fully implement its international obligations; to eliminate its nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare capabilities and ballistic missiles. The international community must maintain pressure on North Korea, including by fully implementing existing UN sanctions.”
나토 대변인은 13일 롭 바우어 나토 군사위원장 방한을 계기로 한반도 안보를 위한 나토의 역할과 협력 방안을 묻는 VOA의 서면 질의에 “우리는 이것이 한국과 많은 나라들의 관심사라는 것을 알고 있다”면서 이같이 답했습니다.
그러면서 “나토는 한반도의 완전하고 검증가능하며 되돌릴 수 없는 비핵화를 전적으로 지지한다”고 밝혔습니다.
이어 “나토는 북한이 핵과 화학, 생물전 역량, 탄도미사일을 폐기하는 국제적인 의무를 완전히 이행할 것을 촉구한다”고 밝혔습니다.
이와 함께 “국제사회는 기존의 유엔 제재에 대한 완전한 이행을 포함해 대북 압박을 유지해야 한다”고 촉구했습니다.
나토 대변인은 한국이 나토의 가치 있는 파트너 국가라며, 나토는 법의 힘이 힘의 법칙보다 우세하도록 하기 위해 전 세계 민주주의 파트너들과 협력하기를 희망한다고 전했습니다.
[나토 대변인] “The Chair of the NATO Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer travelled to the Republic of Korea at the invitation of the Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Won In-choul. The Republic of Korea is a valued NATO Partner. NATO is keen to work with democratic partners around the world, to make sure the force of law prevails over the law of force. The fact that the Chair of the Military Committee travelled to the Republic of Korea at this time shows how much NATO values its partnerships around the globe.”
그러면서 지금과 같은 시기에 바우어 위원장의 방한은 나토가 전 세계에서 얼마나 파트너십을 중시하는지를 보여준다고 설명했습니다.
적국에 대한 나토와 한국 간 협력의 중요성을 묻는 질문에는 민주적이고 같은 생각을 가진 파트너들과의 협력을 강조하며 국제적 과제에는 국제적 해법이 필요하다고 설명했습니다.
[나토 대변인]”Partnerships with democratic and like-minded partners are extremely important. NATO highly values its partnership with the Republic of Korea. Global challenges call for global solutions. The global security is currently under immense pressure. Europe is seeing destruction and displacement on scale not seen since the darkest days of the last century.”
나토 대변인은 세계 안보는 엄청난 압박을 받고 있으며 유럽은 지난 한 세기 전 가장 어두운 시절 이후 볼 수 없었던 파괴적이고 파멸적인 수준의 상황에 직면했다는 점을 상기시켰습니다.
이어 나토의 임무는 자국 영토에 있는 10억 명의 자유와 민주적 권리를 보호하는 것이지만 결과적으로는 전 세계 민주주의 파트너 국가와 함께 전 세계 자유와 법치 보장을 목표로 한다면서 바우어 군사위원장도 이번 방한에서 이 점을 피력했다고 설명했습니다.
[나토 대변인]”During the Admiral’s visit to the Republic of Korea, he talked about feeling a distinct connection to the Armed Forces of the Republic of Korea. “We are all working to serve a greater good: the protection of freedom and democracy. That task forms an invisible bond that transcends wars, generations and even continents.”
한편 지난 12일 주한 폴란드 대사관에서 한국 기자들과 만난 바우어 군사위원장은 북한의 핵과 미사일 위협에 대해 북한의 대륙간탄도미사일의 사정거리는 나토 권역도 포함된다고 말했습니다.
바우어 위원장은 나토는 북핵 문제를 중요한 안보 위협을 여기고 있고 한국과의 지속적인 협력이 필요하다고 말했습니다.
