폼페오 국무장관은 북한 비핵화의 궁극적인 시간표는 김정은 위원장이 설정할 것이라며, 최소한 부분적으로는 그렇다고 밝혔습니다.
[폼페오 장관] “Well, the world should be less nervous than they were before the summit between the two leaders, where we were in a very difficult place with frequent missile launches, nuclear testing taking place. None of that has taken place since June 12th. We’re happy about that. The ultimate timeline for denuclearization will be set by Chairman Kim, at least in part. The decision is his. He made a commitment and we’re very hopeful that over the coming weeks and months we can make substantial progress towards that and put the North Korean people on a trajectory towards a brighter future very quickly.”
폼페오 장관은 3일 싱가포르 채널뉴스아시아와의 인터뷰에서 결정은 김 위원장의 몫이라면서 이렇게 말했습니다.
이어 김 위원장이 약속을 했다며, 미국은 앞으로 수주에서 수개월 동안 이와 관련해 상당한 진전을 이룰 수 있을 것이고, 매우 빠른 시간 안에 북한 주민들을 밝은 미래로 향하는 궤도에 올려놓을 것이라는 데 매우 희망적이라고 밝혔습니다.
미-북 정상회담 이후 비핵화에 더욱 가까워졌느냐는 질문에는 당연히 그렇다고 강조했습니다.
[폼페오 장관] “Oh, of course we are. Of course we’re closer. The two presidents came here and made a historic commitment to each other. Chairman Kim Jong-un made the commitment to denuclearize. That’s consistent with what the UN Security Council has been demanding. There are two resolutions that require North Korea to do just that.”
두 정상은 싱가포르에서 역사적인 약속을 했고, 김 위원장은 비핵화 약속을 했으며, 이는 유엔 안보리의 요구와 일치한다는 겁니다.

We’re still intent upon that. We’re thrilled that North Korea fulfilled its commitment by beginning the process of returning the remains of American servicemen this past week. We hope that process will continue. And we’re confident that Chairman Kim remains committed to denuclearization. The world is counting on it.”
이어 북한이 지난주 미군 유해 송환을 시작하며 약속을 이행해 매우 기쁘다면서, 이런 절차가 계속되기 바란다고 말했습니다.
아울러 김 위원장의 비핵화 약속에 변함이 없음을 확신하며 전 세계가 그렇게 믿고 있다고 강조했습니다.
폼페오 장관은 진전이 있는 데 왜 제재를 완화하지 않느냐는 질문에, 그 동안 얼마나 많은 진전이 이뤄졌는지와 관계없이 모든 일이 끝날 때까지 제재는 유지돼야 하기 때문이라고 답했습니다.
[폼페오 장관] “Oh, because the sanctions must remain in place until we’re done. So no matter how much progress we make along the way - by the way, these aren’t American sanctions - it’s important for the world to know this - these are the world’s sanctions. Every country supported the UN Security Council resolutions, and those sanctions will remain in place until we have full denuclearization in North Korea.”

[폼페오 장관] “So no matter how much progress we make, those sanctions will remain in place. But that day, that day when we achieve this thing that the whole world is demanding - we welcome that day - a brighter future for the people of North Korea will be at hand.”
아울러 북한이 비핵화 절차를 시작하면 제재 완화 등 당근이 주어질 것이냐는 질문에, 유엔 안보리 결의는 매우 명확하다며 상황이 진행되는 동안 분명히 그런 것들이 제공될 것이라고 말했습니다.
[폼페오 장관] “The UN Security Council resolutions are very clear. There will surely be things along the way that take place. We’ve already had meetings. We are engaged in things which will improve the trust between our two countries. Those all make sense. But with respect to sanctions, the UN has spoken; the world has spoken.”
이어 미국은 이미 이와 관련한 만남을 가졌고 미-북 간 신뢰를 증진시킬 일들에 관여하고 있다고 말했습니다.
