마이크 폼페오 국무장관은 북한이 비핵화라는 길을 선택한다면 평화와 번영이 넘치는 미래가 주어질 수 있다고 밝혔습니다. 북한의 위협을 막기 위해선 강력한 검증 프로그램이 필요하다는 점도 강조했습니다. 김영남 기자가 보도합니다.
폼페오 국무장관은 미국과 한국은 한반도의 영구적이고 검증 가능하며 되돌릴 수 없는 비핵화를 이뤄내는 데 전념하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 폼페오 장관] “The United States and the Republic of Korea are committed to achieving the permanent, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. If Chairman Kim chooses the right path, there is a future brimming with peace and prosperity for the North Korea - North Korean people.
폼페오 장관은 11일 국무부에서 강경화 한국 외교장관과 공동 기자회견을 열고 이같이 말했습니다.
이어 김정은 위원장이 올바른 길을 선택한다면 북한과 북한 주민들에게 평화와 번영이 넘쳐흐르는 미래가 있다고 강조했습니다.
아울러 북한이 빠르게 비핵화하기 위해 대담하고 조속한 행동을 취한다면 미국은 북한이 미국의 친구인 한국과 동등한 수준의 번영을 이루는 데 협력할 준비가 돼 있다고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 폼페오 장관] “If North Korea takes bold action quick action to quickly denuclearize the United States is prepared to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity on the par with our South Korean friends. The United States looks forward to continue close cooperation with our South Korean allies on this issue and many others.”
미국은 이 문제에 대해 동맹인 한국과 많은 다른 국가들과의 긴밀한 협력을 계속해 나가는 것을 고대한다는 겁니다.
폼페오 장관은 북한이 미국뿐만 아니라 전세계를 핵무기로 위협하는 역량을 절대 갖추지 못하게 하고, 이를 달성하기 위해서는 강력한 검증 프로그램이 필요하다고 강조했습니다.
[녹취: 폼페오 장관] “How to ensure that North Korea doesn’t possess the capacity to threaten not only the United State but the world with nuclear weapons, and so, in order to achieve that it requires robust verification program and one that we will undertake with partners around the world which will achieve that outcome in a way that frankly no agreement before has ever set forth. A big undertaking for sure but one that Chairman Kim and I have the opportunity to have a good sound discussion on, so I think we have a pretty good understanding between our two countries about what the shared objectives are.”
미국은 전세계의 파트너 국가들과 함께 과거 어떤 합의에서도 없었던 방식으로 이를 달성할 것이라는 설명입니다.
이는 당연히 큰 일이겠지만 김정은 위원장과 자신은 좋은 논의를 가질 기회가 있었다며 양국의 공통적인 목표들이 무엇인지에 대해 꽤 잘 이해하고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
폼페오 장관은 또 북한에 억류됐던 미국인 3명이 석방된 것은 트럼프 대통령과 김정은 위원장 사이에 성공적인 만남을 위한 여건들을 형성하는 데 도움이 됐다고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 폼페오 장관] “The release of these three citizens help set the conditions for a successful meeting between President Trump and Chairman Kim. We look forward to our continued preparations with the DPRK to make the summit in Singapore on June 12th, a true success for the American and Korean people and for the world.”
이어 미국은 6월 12일 싱가포르에서의 열릴 정상회담이 미국과 한국 국민들, 그리고 전세계에 진정한 성공이 될 수 있도록 북한과 계속 준비해 나가길 고대한다고 설명했습니다.
폼페오 장관은 또 지난달 한국과 북한의 역사적인 만남을 축하한다며 미국은 판문점 선언에 명시된 완전한 비핵화라는 문재인 대통령과 김정은 위원장의 목표에 고무적이라고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 폼페오 장관] “I congratulate South Korea and North Korea on their historic meeting last month. The United States is encouraged by President Moon and Chairman Kim’s stated goal of complete denuclearization in the Panmunjom Declaration. Today, Foreign Minister Kang and I discussed the summit, my trip to North Korea, and the bold step President Trump is about to take when he meets with Chairman Kim. We would not be where we are today without the close and coordinated leadership of Presidents Trump and Moon.”
폼페오 장관은 다가올 정상회담과 자신의 북한 방문, 그리고 트럼프 대통령이 김정은 위원장을 만나면 취할 대담한 조치 등에 대해 강경화 장관과 논의했다고 설명했습니다.
이어 트럼프 대통령과 문재인 대통령의 긴밀하고 조율된 지도력 없이 현 상황에 도달하지 못했을 것이라고 덧붙였습니다.
