B: It’s a line to buy lottery tickets. It’s only a day away from the next drawing for the huge Powerball lottery jackpot. It’s a 390 million dollar jackpot.
A: 390 million dollars? Unbelievable! I’m going to buy some tickets. Care to join me?

복권 한 장 사는데 얼마 정도 하나요?

복권마다 다르긴 하지만, 보통 1달러 정도 합니다.
• Look at the long line at that store!
‘Loot at’ 은 ‘~을 보다’는 뜻이죠? Look at the long line, 저기 저 줄 좀 봐 at the store, 저기 가게에 what do you think 뭐라고 생각하니? That line is for? 저 줄이, 즉 ‘저기 가게에 사람들 줄 서 있는 것 좀 봐! 왜 저렇게 줄 서 있지?’ 라는 말입니다.
줄은 영어로 Line 또는 ‘Row’ 이고요, ‘줄을 서다’는 ‘Join a line’, ‘join a row’, ‘get in line’, ‘stand in line’, ‘wait in line’등 다양하게 나타낼 수 있습니다.
ex) Please get in line.
줄을 서서 기다리세요.
반대로, 줄을 서지 않고 간혹 중간에 끼어 드는 사람들 있잖아요, 새치기 한다고 하는데, 새치기 하다, 영어로, ‘Cut in line’, 또는 ‘Push in line’, ‘butt in line’ 이라고 합니다.
ex) You shouldn’t cut in line. You have to stand in line like the others.
새치기 하지 말고 다른 사람들처럼 줄을 서야 합니다.

저 줄은 뭐니? 뭐 때문에 저렇게 줄 서있는 거니?
- ‘What do you think’ 라는 문장과, ‘What is that line for?’ 라는 문장이 합해진 문장인데요, 두 문장이 합해 질 때, ‘What do you think is that line for ?’ 가 아니라, ‘is’ 와 ‘that line’, 의 순서가 바뀌어서, ‘What do you think that line is for?’ 의 순으로 온다는 것도 꼭 기억해 두세요.

- ‘It’s a line’ 줄이야, ‘to buy lottery tickets’ 복권을 사기 위한, 즉 ‘복권을 사기 위한 줄이야’ 라는 뜻입니다.
ex) 버스 타려고 줄 서있는 거야.

ex) 영화 표 사려고 줄 서 있는 거야.

- It’s only a day away 딱 하루 남았습니다. From the next drawing 다음 번 추첨으로부터 for the huge Powerball lottery jackpot 엄청난 파워볼 복권 당첨금이 걸린, 즉 ‘엄청난 파워볼 복권 당첨금이 걸린 다음 번 추첨이 딱 하루 남았습니다.’ 라는 뜻이죠.
It’s a day or a week or a year away from something,하면 (~무엇 무엇으로부터) 하루, 일주일, 일년 정도 남았다는 뜻입니다. 예를 들어, 회사에서 은퇴하려면 1년 정도 남았어, 즉 1년 뒤면 나 은퇴해, 영어로 하면, ‘It’s only a week away from my retirement.’ 하실 수 있습니다.
ex) 나 졸업 하려면 한 달 정도 남았어.
- It’s a month away from my graduation.
- 출산 1주일 정도 남았어.

계속해서 ‘from the next drawing’ 에서 ‘drawing’은 ‘추첨’이라는 뜻입니다.
‘Draw’는 ‘그림을 그리다’, ‘~(무엇 무엇)을 끌다’, ‘활을 당기다, 제비를 뽑다’등 다양한 의미가 있는데요, from the next drawing 에서 drawing 은 ‘제비를 뽑다, 추첨하다’는 뜻의 명사형으로 ‘추첨’ 이라는 뜻입니다. 그래서 ‘next drawing’ 은 ‘다음 번 추첨’ 이라는 뜻이죠.
ex) 파워 볼 복권 다음 번 추첨은 언젠가요?

복권 추첨은 혹시 언제 하는지 아나요?

계속해서, ‘Jackpot’은 ‘a large amount of money that is the most valuable prize in a game of chance’ 즉 ‘복권이나 도박에서의 거액의 상금, 당첨금’을 의미합니다.
그래서 ‘대박 나다’, 영어로 ‘hit the jackpot’ 이라고 하죠.

Million 은 백만, billion, 은 백 억이라는 것 기억해 두세요. 그래서 백만 장자를 Millionaire, 라고 억만 장자를 billionaire 라고 하죠!
그럼 북한의 인구 수를 영어로 한번 나타내 볼까요?

북한 인구수 얼마나 되죠?
B: According to the CIA fact book, the population of North Korea is about 24 million.
CIA Fact book에 따르면 북한의 인구수는 2천 4백만 입니다.

- 믿을 수 없어! 믿겨 지지 않아! 라는 말이죠.
‘I can’t believe it’ 또는 ‘That’s incredible’ 해도 같은 뜻입니다.
• You know the chance of winning that lottery is so slim.
- ‘Chance’, 는 ‘기회, 가능성’이고요, ‘복권에 당첨되다’는 ‘이기다’는 뜻의 동사죠? ‘Win’ 을 써서, ‘win the lottery’ 할 수 있습니다. 또 ‘slim’ ‘얇은, 날씬한, 보잘것없는’ 이라는 뜻이 있죠.
그래서 ‘the chance of winning that lottery is so slim’, 하면 그 복권에 당첨될 가능성이 매우 낮다는 뜻이죠.
ex) The odds of winning the lottery are 1 out of 176 million (people).
복권 1등에 당첨될 확률은1억 7천 6백만 분의 1 정도 됩니다.
-확률, 가능성, chance 대신에 odds, O D D S를 써서 나타낼 수 도 있습니다. 그래서 ‘The chance of winning that lottery’ 는 ‘The odds of winning that lottery’와 바꿔 쓸 수 있다는 것도 기억해 두세요.
