Flights to and from Bangkok's main airport have resumed, after anti-government protesters ended a week-long occupation of the facility.

The takeover left more than a quarter-million tourists stranded and devastated Thailand's vital tourism industry.

A Thai Airways flight from the resort island of Phuket today (Wednesday) became the first plane to land at the (Suvarnabhumi international) airport since the takeover ended. International departures began later.

The takeover by supporters of the People's Alliance for Democracy was aimed at pressing demands for the resignation of Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.

The protesters agreed to leave after Thailand's Constitutional Court outlawed the country's top three parties and banned their leaders, including Mr. Somchai, from politics for five years. The court found the parties guilty of voter fraud.

Deputy Prime Minister Chaovarat Chanweerakul will serve as caretaker prime minister until parliament approves a new head of government.
