쿠바의 수도 하바나를 방문한 메드베데프 대통령은 미국이 밝힌 새 입장은 상식이 통한다는 것을 보여준다고 말했습니다.
라이스 미국 국무장관은 지난 26일 북대서양조약기구가 옛 소련 국가인 그루지아와 우크라이나에 회원국 가입 행동계획을 제시하도록 압박하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 라이스 장관은 그러나 그루지아와 우크라이나가 언젠가 북대서양조약기구에 가입할 것이며, 두 나라와의 접촉을 더 강화하겠다고 말했습니다.
Russian President Dmitri Medvedev says (today/Friday)he is satisfied with comments made earlier this week by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice about NATO membership for Georgia and Ukraine.
Medvedev said during a visit to the Cuban capital of Havana that the new U.S. position shows "common sense prevailed."
On Wednesday, Rice said the U.S. would not press for NATO to offer the two former Soviet republics Membership Action Plans. NATO says Membership Action Plans are a way of providing countries that want to join the military alliance with necessary "advice, assistance and practical support."
Rice says Georgia and Ukraine will still join NATO at some point, and that contacts with both countries will be intensified.
Russia opposes bids by Georgia and Ukraine to join NATO. The bids have also met growing resistance from some NATO members, who fear angering Russia.
