The prestigious Nobel prize in Chemistry has been awarded to three scientists who first observed and studied a glowing green protein found in jellyfish.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm announced that Japanese scientist Osamu Shimomura, and Americans Martin Chalfie and Roger Tsien won the prize today (Wednesday)for their work studying the protein GFP.

The Nobel committee says the development of GFP has allowed researchers to develop ways to watch previously invisible processes inside living cells. It can be used to track how nerve cells in the brain function and how cancer spreads.

On Wednesday, two Japanese scientists and an American of Japanese origin won the Nobel prize in Physics for their studies of the sub-atomic particles that help explain the make-up of the universe.
