유럽의 지도자들이 국제 금융위기 사태에 대처하기 위해 보다 많은 협력을 촉구한 지 하루가 지난 5일 유럽 전 지역의 정부들은 위기에 처한 은행들을 구제하기 위해 안간힘을 쓰고 있습니다.
독일에서는 5일 정부와 업계 지도자들이 만나 현재 위기에 처한 상업부동산 대출전문 금융기관인 히포 리얼 에스테이트를 구제하기 위한 방안을 논의했습니다. 앞서 4일 이 금융기관을 구제하기 위한 480억 달러 상당의 구제안은 무산된 바 있습니다.
독일의 앙겔라 메르켈 총리는 관계관들이 히포 회사를 구제하기 위해 현재 열심히 노력하고 있다면서 독일은 한 금융기관의 위기로 인해 전체 금융 체제가 위기에 빠지도록 만들지는 않을 것이라고 강조했습니다.
벨기에와 네델란드도 위기에 처한 금융 기관들을 구제하기 위해 노력하고 있습니다.
프랑스와 영국, 독일, 그리고 이탈리아의 지도자들은 앞서 4일 만나 이들 나라의 금융 분야를 지원하기 위한 공동 협정을 체결하기로 합의했습니다.

Governments across Europe are
scrambling to save failing banks today (Sunday), a day after European
leaders called for a more coordinated response to the global financial crisis.
In Germany today, government and business leaders met to discuss efforts to
save the troubled commercial property lender, Hypo Real Estate AG. A 48-billion
dollar rescue plan to salvage the German company fell through Saturday.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said officials are working hard to secure the
lending company. She said Berlin will not allow the distress of one financial
institution to distress the entire system.
In Belgium, financial officials struggled to find a buyer for Fortis, a Belgian
and Dutch banking and insurance group. The Netherlands recently nationalized
the group's Dutch operations.
The leaders of France, Britain, Germany and Italy met Saturday in Paris and
agreed to sign a formal pact to support their individual banking sectors.
