미국 공화당 대선 후보인 존 매케인 상원의원이 경쟁자인 민주당의 바락 오바마 상원 의원보다 4 퍼센트 지지율을 앞선것으로 나타났습니다.
유에스에이 투데이와 갤럽의 여론조사 결과에 따르면 매케인 의원은 50퍼센트의 지지율로 46퍼센트에 그친 오바마 의원을 추월했습니다. 매케인 의원 지지율 상승은 지난주 공화당 전당대회 개최와 새라 페일린 알래스카 주지사를 부통령 후보로 지명한 데 따른 효과로 해석되고 있습니다.
매케인 의원은 어제 미국 CBS 방송의 시시토크쇼에 출연해 자신을 공화당내 개혁세력으로 자처하고, 대통령에 당선된다면 민주당과 무소속 인사를 두루 고위층에 영입할 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
오바마 의원은 어제 ABC 방송과의 회견에서 민주당원들 사이에 인기가 없을지라도 의사들에 대한 법정 소송비용을 줄이고, 미군부의 규모를 늘리는 방안 등의 개혁안을 추진할 것이라고 공약했습니다.

A new U.S. public opinion poll shows Republican presidential candidate John
McCain leading his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, by four percentage points.
The USA Today-Gallup poll says McCain leads Obama by 50 percent to 46 percent
among registered voters. The poll shows McCain got a boost from last week's
Republican Party convention and the selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as
his vice presidential running mate.
On CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday, Senator McCain described himself
as a force for change within the Republican Party by taking on big spenders and
supporting campaign finance reform. McCain says if he is elected he would bring
in Democrats and independents at the highest levels.
In an interview Sundayon ABC (This Week with George Stephanopoulos),
Senator Obama said he was ready to make major changes that may be unpopular
with Democrats, such as reducing litigation costs for doctors and increasing
the size of the military.
