폴슨 장관은 20일 미국 CBS-TV와 CNN 방송에 출연해 미국 의회가 문제가 많은 양대 국책모기지 업체인 패니메이와 프레디 맥의 신뢰를 회복시키는데 필요한 연방 정부의 지원책을 승인할 것으로 예상한다고 말했습니다.
앞서 조지 부시 대통령은 주례라디오 연설을 통해 의회에게 재무부의 이같은 지원책을 신속히 승인할 것을 촉구했습니다.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson says he expects the slowdown in the American economy will last for months before any improvement is seen.
At the heart of the U.S. economy's problems, Paulson says, is a crisis in housing, marked by declining real-estate prices, a slump in home-building and worries about the stability of the banking sector.
Speaking on U.S. television (CBS: "Face the Nation," CNN: "Late Edition") today (Sunday), Paulson said he expects Congress to approve a federal rescue plan for the troubled mortgage lending institutions Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
In his weekly radio address to the nation on Saturday, President Bush called for a quick vote by Congress on the Treasury Department plan, which would expand lines of credit to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and allow the government to step in to buy the lenders' stock if necessary.
