미 국무부의 제임스 스완 씨와 토마스 크리슨 씨는 미국 상원 아프리카 담당 위원회의 합동 증언회에 앞서 중국의 수단에서의 역할을 소개하며 이같이 밝혔습니다.
이들은 수단에 대한 중국의 노력은 중국 정부가 다르푸르 위기 해결을 돕는 데 영향을 미친다고 밝혔습니다. 이들은 또 미국 정부는 중국이 수단과 거래하는 무기가 다르푸르 지역에서 사용될 수 있기 때문에 무기 거래를 중단할 것을 요청했다고 밝혔습니다.
두 당국자는 또 중국 정부는 아프리카에서의 노력을 통해 아프리카 대륙의 경제 발전을 돕고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.

Two U.S. officials have praised China for increasing pressure on Sudan to resolve the crisis in the Darfur region, while urging Beijing to do more.
State Department officials James Swan and Thomas Christensen outlined China's role in Sudan today (Wednesday) in joint testimony before a U.S. Senate subcommittee on African affairs.
They said China's energy investments in Sudan give Beijing influence with the government that should be used to promote a solution to the crisis in Darfur.
Swan and Christensen said the U.S. has asked China to halt its companies' arms trade with Sudan because of the likelihood those weapons will be used in Darfur.
The two officials concluded that China's investment in Africa is already helping the continent's economic development. They said discussions about China's role in Africa will focus on the U.S. goals of promoting democracy, human rights and political stability.
