A U.S.-based human rights group has called a decision by the Saudi court system to drop charges against the employer of an abused maid "outrageous."

Human Rights Watch says Nour Miyati, from Indonesia, was beaten daily and that she had to have her fingers and toes amputated because of delays in getting treatment of gangrene.

Earlier this week, a Saudi court awarded Miyati 670-dollars as compensation for her injuries. But the judge also dismissed charges against the wife of Miyati's employer, citing a lack of evidence.

The wife had initially confessed to the abuse and been sentenced to 35 lashes. Her husband was never charged.

Human Rights Watch has demanded that a Saudi appeals court reexamine the case and impose harsh penalties on Miyati's Saudi employers.
