어제 북대서양조약기구, 나토 정상회의에서 미국이 추진중인 중부유럽의 미사일 방어체제가 지지를 받은 데 이어, 오늘 나토 정상들이 미사일 방어체제에 반대하고 있는 러시아의 블라드미르 푸틴 대통령과 만났습니다.
나토의 야프 데 호프 스헤페르 사무총장은 오늘 루마니아의 수도 부쿠레슈티에서 열린 나토 정상들과 푸틴 대통령과의 회담은 긍정적인 분위기에서 진행됐다고 밝혔으나 특별한 타개책이 나왔는지에 대해서는 언급하지 않았습니다.
푸틴 대통령은 나토 정상들과 만나 기뻤다고 말하면서도, 미국의 미사일 방어체제에 대해서는 반대의사를 거듭 밝혔습니다.
이에 앞서 나토 정상들은 우크라이나의 빅토르 유셴코 대통령과 만나 우크라이나의 나토 가입에 대해 논의했습니다.
나토는 어제 정상회의에서 옛 소련 국가들인 우크라이나와 그루지아에 대해 궁극적으로 나토 가입을 승인할 계획이나 두 나라가 아직 가입 절차를 시작할 준비가 안돼 있는 것으로 결론 내렸습니다.

NATO leaders have wrapped up their Bucharest summit meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a day after the alliance backed U.S. plans to deploy a missile defense system in central Europe.
NATO Secretary General Jaap De Hoop Scheffer said today's talks in the Romanian capital were held in a positive spirit, but reported no breakthroughs.
Mr. Putin later said he is pleased with the discussions, but noted certain problems, such as Russia's objections to the U.S. anti-missile defense plans and continued NATO expansion.
Earlier today, NATO leaders met with Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko to discuss the outlook for his country's alliance membership.
Thursday, the NATO leaders said Ukraine and Georgia are not yet ready to start the alliance entry process, but stressed that both former Soviet republics are clearly on their way to membership.
Mr. Yushchenko called this a historic event for his country and its people.
