조지 부시 미국대통령은 루마니아 수도 부카레스트에서 열리는 북대서양조약기구 나토 정상회의가 동맹국들의 아프가니스탄 전투병력 증파를 뒷받침할 것이라는 자신감을 표시했습니다.
부시 대통령은 나토 정상들이 실무만찬과 함께 정상회의를 시작하기에 앞서 얍 데 후프 쉐퍼 나토 사무총장을 만난 자리에서 그같이 말했습니다.
이보다 앞서, 부시 대통령은 루마나이의 트라이안 바세스쿠 대통령과 정상회담을 갖고 난 후, 아프간 작전을 위해 추가 병력을 파병하겠다는 프랑스와 다른 나토 동맹국들의 약속에 만족을 표시했습니다.
부시 대통령은 또한 나토정상회의가 알바니아와 크로아티아 마케도니아를 나토 회원국으로 받아 들여야 한다고 촉구했습니다.
또한 부시 대통령은 러시아에게 중부 유럽에 미사일 방어기지를 설치하려는 미국 계획에 대한 반대를 철회하라고 촉구했습니다.

U.S. President George W. Bush has expressed confidence that the NATO summit in Bucharest will bolster alliance combat forces in Afghanistan.
Mr. Bush spoke in the Romanian capital as he met with NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer shortly before alliance leaders opened the summit with a working dinner.
Earlier, following talks with Romanian President Traian Basescu, Mr. Bush expressed satisfaction with pledges by France and other NATO countries to send more troops for Afghan operations.
Mr. Basescu agreed, noting that any NATO failure will significantly weaken the alliance and threaten countries worldwide.
Mr. Bush also urged the summit to invite Albania, Croatia and Macedonia to NATO membership.
Earlier, Mr. Bush again urged opening the path to NATO membership for Ukraine and Georgia -- a move opposed by some NATO countries and Russia, which sees the eastern expansion of the alliance as a threat.
