길라니 신임 총리는 무샤라프 대통령의 통치 아래에서 4년이상 투옥됐으며, 지난해 암살된 베나지르 부토 전 총리가 이끌던 파키스탄인민당의 부의장을 맡았습니다.
한편 미국 국무부의 존 네그로폰테 부장관과 리처드 바우처 차관보는 오늘 파키스탄을 방문해 야당인 파키스탄 무슬림연맹당을 이끌고 있는 나와즈 샤리프 전 총리와 만났습니다.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has sworn in the country's newly-elected Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Mr. Musharraf administered the oath of office to the former parliament speaker in a ceremony at the presidential palace in Islamabad today (Tuesday).
Mr. Gilani, who spent more than four years in jail under Mr. Musharraf's rule, is a senior member of the Pakistan Peoples Party of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto. Members of the party chanted "Long Live Bhutto" as Mr. Gilani completed his oath during the short ceremony.
Earlier today, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher arrived in Pakistan for talks with government officials. They met with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, a key player in Pakistan's new governing coalition (and head of the Pakistan Muslim League-N).
