미국의 로버트 게이츠 국방장관은, 올해초 취임한 이래 세번째로 3일 아프가니스탄을 방문했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 아프가니스탄 방문중 4일에 하미드 카르자이 대통령과 회담을 가질 예정입니다. 게이츠 장관은 또한 미군과 나토 주도 국제안보지원군 사령관들과도 만나 전략을 논의할 계획입니다.
게이츠 장관은 기자들에게 지난 2-3년동안 아프가니스탄에서 폭력이 계속 증가되고 있는데 대해 우려한다고 기자들에게 말했습니다.
게이츠 장관이 아프가니스탄에 도착하던 3일, 서남부 니므로즈 주에서 경찰 순찰차 부근에서 일어난 저항세력의 자살폭탄공격으로 경찰관 2명 등 모두 4명이 사망했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is in Afghanistan -- his third visit since taking over as head of the Pentagon earlier this year.
Gates is scheduled to hold talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday. He also is expected to meet with the commanders of U.S. forces and the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
Gates told reporters he is concerned with the continuing overall increase in violence in Afghanistan over the past two or three years.
The start of his visit today (Monday) coincided with a suicide bombing in southwestern Nimroz province. Four people died -- including two policemen -- when the bomber blew himself up next to a police patrol.
Earlier in the day, U.S.-led coalition forces in Afghanistan reported killing a Taliban commander believed to have been involved in the March kidnapping of an Italian journalist.
