키스 크라크: 우리에게는 정말 대단한 팀이 있습니다. 예를 들어 '위대한 미국 주 박람회(Great American State Fair)’ 같은 대형 프로젝트를 생각해 보면, 매일 다른 주제가 있습니다. 내셔널몰에 약 10만 명에서 15만 명이 방문할 것으로 예상합니다.
이 행사는 온전히 미국적인 것들(Americana)로 채워집니다. 이전에는 한 번도 시도된 적이 없는 거죠. 미국 50개 주와 6개 미국령을 모두 포함하고 있고, 역사와 교육, 혁신, 기술 등 다양한 주제의 전시관을 운영할 예정입니다.
그리고 또 하나 매우 중요한 것은, 우리는 모든 미국인에게 다가가기를 원하기 때문에 미국 전역에서 다양한 행사를 진행하고 있다는 겁니다.
프리덤 트럭 (Freedom Trucks)
키스 크라크: 아주 좋은 예가 ‘프리덤 트럭’입니다. 이 트럭들은 실제로 확장되는 18륜 대형 트럭인데, 이동식 박물관이며 최첨단 기술을 갖추고 있습니다. 사람들이 직접 체험할 수 있는 다양한 것을 갖추고 있죠. 이런 트럭이 미국 전역을 누비고 있습니다. 그래서 아마 올해 말까지 1천여 지역사회를 방문하게 될 것입니다.
그리고 보잉(Boeing)사에서 우리에게 '프리덤 플레인(Freedom Plane)'을 제공했습니다. 이 비행기 역시 미국 전역을 돌고 있습니다. 프리덤 플레인 안에는 미국의 가장 중요한 건국 관련 문서 일부가 실려 있습니다. 이들 문서는 지금까지 한 번도 국립문서보관소(National Archives) 밖으로 나온 적이 없었습니다. 그래서 우리는 그 문서들을 국민에게 직접 가져가고 있는 것입니다.
FIFA

키스 크라크: 아주 자연스러운 조합입니다. 우리가 맡은 중요한 임무 가운데 하나가 바로 모두를 뭉치게 하는 것이기 때문입니다. 스포츠를 생각해 보면, 스포츠는 사람들을 하나로 묶어 줍니다.
정치적 성향은 중요하지 않습니다. 국가 대항 경기도 있고요.
그래서 미국을 보고 자유를 생각해 보면, 결국 중요한 것은 직접 경기장에 나서는 것처럼 직접 참여하는 것이라고 생각합니다.
이건 정말 자연스러운 조합이에요. 왜냐하면… 우리 주요 임무 중 하나는 바로 모든 사람을 하나로 뭉치게 하는 것이거든요. 스포츠를 생각해 보면, 스포츠는 사람들을 하나로 묶어주는 훌륭한 매개체죠. 정치적 성향이 어떻든 상관없어요. 게다가 국제 대회도 있고요. 그러니, 아시다시피 미국을 생각할 때, 자유를 생각할 때, 결국 중요한 건 경기장에 나서서 뛰는 것이잖아요. 맞아요.
여기 분위기는 정말 좋습니다. 워싱턴에 FIFA 팬 존(FIFA Fan Zone)이 마련돼 있는데, 사람들이 와서 경기를 관람합니다. 아주 멋지죠. 심지어 아이들이 축구할 수 있는 작은 공간도 있습니다. 제가 17일에 그 모습을 지켜보고 있었는데, 이 아이들이 처음에는 서로 모르는 사이라는 걸 알 수 있었습니다. 많은 아이가 서로 다른 나라에서 왔는데, 모두 함께 축구를 하고 있더군요.
저는 '바로 저 아이들이, 미래의 월드컵 꿈나무들이구나' 하고 생각했습니다. 바로 그런 정신이며, 우리는 이것을 '미국의 승리 정신(spirit of America triumph)'이라고 부릅니다. 그리고 그 정신을 크게 기념합니다. 그래서 스포츠는 우리가 하는 일에서 매우 중요한 역할을 하고 있습니다.
그랑프리 (Grand Prix)

의사당과 백악관, 워싱턴 기념탑 같은 상징적인 장소를 배경으로 자동차 경주가 진행될 예정입니다.
말에서 마력으로 (From horses to horsepower)
키스 크라크: 워싱턴에서 이런 종류의 경주가 열린 것은 제3대 대통령인 토머스 제퍼슨 시절 이후 처음입니다. 다만 당시에는 자동차가 아니라 말이었습니다.
이제는 진짜 마력(horsepower)을 갖춘 경주를 하게 됐습니다. 그리고 저는 6월 셋째 주 주말에는 샌디에이고에 있었습니다. 코로나도(Coronado) 해군기지 주변에서 열리는 ‘프리덤 250 NASCAR 경주’ 때문입니다.
진행자: 프리덤 250에 대한 아이디어는 어디서 영감을 받으셨나요?
키스 크라크: 프리덤 250에 관해 생각해 보면, 가장 핵심적인 생각은 이것이 단지 우리의 과거를 돌아보는 것만이 아니라는 점입니다. 심지어 우리의 현재도 아닙니다. 우리의 미래에 관한 것입니다. 따라서 우리의 임무는 하나의 ‘운동(movement)’을 만드는 것입니다.
자부심의 운동, 애국심의 운동, 그리고 전 세계에 자유라는 높은 가치를 전파하는 운동입니다.
결국, 그것이 핵심입니다. 그런 운동을 시작하는 데 있어 초점은 네트워크를 구축하는 것입니다. 그것이 바로 ‘프리덤 250 네트워크’입니다. 이 안에 모든 사람, 모든 기관, 학교, 정부 기관, 종교 기반 단체가 포함됩니다. 그렇게 네트워크를 갖추게 되는 것이죠.

진행자: 미국에는 다양한 문화와 공동체가 있는데요. 이들은 건국 250주년 행사에 어떤 방식으로 참여하고 있습니까?
키스 크라크: 다양한 문화가 이 행사를 더욱 즐겁게 만드는 것 같습니다.
이곳의 여러 대사관과 많은 협력을 하고 있기 때문이죠. 최근 아르메니아계 공동체가 주최한 멋진 행사에 참석했었는데, 그들은 아르메니아계 혁신가들을 기념하고 있었습니다. 스웨덴, 일본, 한국도 있죠. 일본은 우리에게 벚나무와 여러 가지를 기증해 주었습니다.
그래서 모두가 참여하고 있고, 모두가 즐기고 있다고 생각합니다.
그리고 오는 7월 4일에 전 세계 곳곳에서 많은 기념물이 빨간색, 흰색, 파란색으로 불을 밝힐 것입니다. 파리의 에펠탑도 빨간색, 흰색, 파란색으로 조명이 켜질 예정입니다.
물론 그것은 프랑스 국기의 색깔이기도 합니다. 하지만 우리에게는 7월 4일을 기념하는 의미도 있습니다.
지금까지의 반응 (Feedback so far)
키스 크라크: 지금까지의 반응은 정말 대단했습니다. 특히 주목할 점은 모두가 자원봉사를 하고 싶어한다는 점입니다. "우리가 도울 일이 무엇인가요?"라면서요.
제가 얼마나 많은 이메일을 받았는지, 또 얼마나 많은 사람이 찾아와서 “이 일을 위해 어떻게 우리가 도울 수 있을까요?”라고 물었는지 말로 다 할 수 없을 정도입니다.
그리고 또 한 가지 말씀드리자면, 우리는 '리데디케이트 250(Rededicate 250)' 행사를 열었습니다. 기도와 찬양, 감사의 전국적인 축제였습니다.
내셔널몰에 약 3만 명이 모였습니다. 그곳에서 보안 요원 중 한 명과 대화를 나누었는데, 제가 평소 군인이나 응급구조대원들에게 항상 하듯이 "헌신에 감사드립니다"라고 말했습니다. 그랬더니 그분이 "그것 참 흥미로운 말이네요"라고 하더군요.
그래서 제가 "헌신에 감사드린다는 말이 왜 흥미로운가요?"라고 물었죠. 그분은 "당신이 오늘 저에게 그 말을 한 대략 35번째 사람입니다"라고 하더군요.
이어 "아시다시피 저는 뉴욕의 경찰관입니다. 오늘 하루 동안 받은 감사 인사가 뉴욕에서 25년 동안 근무하면서 받은 것보다 더 많습니다"라고 말했습니다."
그런 감사의 마음을 불러일으키는 거죠. 바로 자신을 되돌아보는 성찰의 일부이기 때문입니다. 저는 제 자신의 ‘미국 이야기’를 돌아봅니다.
저는 클리블랜드에서 자랐습니다. 아버지는 직원 5명 규모의 작은 기계 부품 공장을 운영하셨습니다. 형편이 좋을 때도, 어려울 때도 사실상 아버지와 저 둘뿐이었습니다.
저는 12살 때 용접을 했습니다. 그런 제가 지금까지의 경력에서 많은 일을 이룰 수 있었고, 이제 프리덤 250의 CEO가 됐습니다. 이것은 최고의 영광입니다.
저는 마치 포레스트 검프가 된 기분입니다. 제가 어떻게 여기까지 오게 된 걸까요? 그래서 미국 건국 250주년 행사를 이끌 수 있다는 것은 저에게 큰 영광입니다.
나눔의 테마 (Theme of giving)
진행자: 로지 리오스(Rosie Rios) 아메리카 250 위원장도 기부와 자원봉사에 관해 이야기했는데요. 독립기념일은 물론 그 이후에도 시간과 돈, 자선 활동을 통해 애국심을 실천하고, 각자가 할 수 있는 방식으로 기여하는 것에 관해 말했습니다.
키스 크라크: 전적으로 동감합니다. 자유를 생각해 보면, 자유는 지켜져야 하고, 보호되어야 합니다. 자유를 보호하기 위해서는 봉사와 희생이 따릅니다.
제가 미국인들에게서 가장 좋아하는 것은 바로 봉사 정신입니다. 다른 사람에게 선행을 베풀고(Pay it forward), 보답하는(give it back) 것 말입니다.
미국은 아마 세계에서 가장 관대한 나라일 것입니다. 그리고 너무나 훌륭한 일을 하는 훌륭한 사람들이 정말 많이 있습니다. 우리는 그런 이야기들을 읽기도 하고, 보기도 하지만, 대부분의 경우는 아마 듣지 못하고 지나칠 것입니다. 하지만 작은 선행이 큰 힘을 발휘합니다.

그래서 우리는 이들이 우리의 자유를 더욱 굳건하게 하고, 우리의 나라를 더욱 강하게 만들며, 그 가치를 널리 확산시키기를 바랍니다.
제가 국무부 차관으로 있으면서 배운 것이 있다면, 흔히 미국식 중산층의 안정적인 삶을 상징하는 ‘흰 울타리가 있는 집과 아이들, 그리고 개 한 마리’ 같은 삶이 결코 저절로 주어지는 것이 아니라는 점입니다.
그리고 자연의 순리는 때로는 나쁜 왕이나 제국의 독재자인 경우도 있습니다. 매일 이런 것들에 맞서 지켜내지 않는다면, 자유는 사라질 수도 있습니다. 이것이 제가 미국 국무부와 우리 군에 큰 존경심을 갖는 이유 가운데 하나입니다. 그리고 저는 미국이 없었다면 수십 개 나라들이 자유를 조금도 맛보지 못했을 것이라고 생각합니다. 우리는 이것을 당연하게 여겨서는 안 됩니다.
벤저민 프랭클린은 “당신이 지켜낼 수만 있다면 공화국은 위대한 제도입니다”고 말했습니다.
진행자: 마지막 질문입니다. 행사 현수막이 내려가고 모든 것이 다시 일상으로 돌아간 뒤에 사람들이 무엇을 기억하기를 바라시나요? 앞으로 마음속에 간직했으면 하는 것이 있습니까? 물론 올해가 지나면 미국은 건국 251년 차로 접어들 테니까요.
키스 크라크: 네, 저희는 이 운동이 앞으로도 계속 이어지기를 바랍니다.그리고 중요한 것은 민주주의는 참여를 필요로 한다는 사실입니다. 프리덤 250 역시 모든 사람이 참여하기를 바라고 있습니다.

“다른 언어를 말할 수 있다면 다른 문화를 이해하게 될 것이고, 다른 문화를 이해하게 되면 모든 문화를 이해할 수 있게 된다.” 고 말이죠.
다음은 키스 크라크 프리덤 250 최고경영자(CEO) 와의 인터뷰 영문 버전입니다.
Q. Please describe what Freedom 250 is…
Well, freedom 250 is our mission is to celebrate America's 250th. And that's the charge that we got from the president. So we have over 4,000 events, 100 initiatives. It goes all year long. And the objective is to bring all Americans together to celebrate, but also the international community to celebrate freedom.
And that, you know, if you look at what the United States biggest export is, it's not the product, but it's an idea and that's freedom.
Q. You’ve said “America’s greatest innovation was never a product; it was a system that let anyone built one.” Can you elaborate on that.
I think, you know, that has a lot to do with free enterprise. I think that was an article I wrote in fortune magazine ... And if you think about it, if there's anything that I've learned, uh, whether it's on the manufacturing floors of Detroit, in Silicon Valley or serving the government, it's that freedom matters.
And without freedom, you can't have innovation. Without innovation, you can't have prosperity. And without prosperity, there's no chance for peace or stability. So, you know, freedom is the great enabler.
Q. How is Freedom 250 different than America 250.
Sure. So if you look at freedom 250, we're integrating everything. So a 250 commission is part of the Freedom 250 network. So we work with all the federal agencies. We work with state and local governments, we work with churches, communities, all faith based organizations, institutions, universities, everybody. So our job is to integrate it all together.
Q. So America 250 had a little bit of a head start over you guys that have been doing this for years, how on earth did you manage? I think you launched in January to get so many initiatives and programs together in such a short space of time.
The Great American State Fair
We have an amazing team and, you know, it's spectacular. So when you think of, for example, these big initiatives like the Great American State Fair, this goes from June 20th 5th to July 10th. There's a different theme every day. We expect probably 100 to 150,000 people here on the National Mall.
And this is all Americana. And it's never been done before. We've got all 50 states, you know, six territories. We'll have pavilions on history, education, innovation, technology, you name it. And then, the other thing that's really important to us, because we want to reach all Americans is we have stuff going on all over the US.
Freedom Trucks
And a great example is our freedom trucks. So these are big 18-Wheeler trucks that actually expand. And those are mobile museums and really high tech. They've got all kinds of experiential things that you can do in it. And they're crisscrossing the country. So they'll probably by the end of this year it will hit a thousand communities.
And then also Boeing gave us the Freedom Plane that's also traveled around the US. And that has some of America's most important founding documents that have never been out of the National Archives. So we're taking them to the people.
FIFA
Q. So let's talk about FIFA. Tell me about the connection between Freedom 250 and FIFA.
It is a natural fit because … part of our big job is really uniting everybody. And if you think about sports, that is a great uniter. It doesn't matter what side of the political aisle you're on. And then the international competition. So, you know, if you look at America, you look at freedom, it’s ultimately about getting out there on the field. Right.
It’s really great here. We have our FIFA fan zone here in Washington, and people come here, they watch these matches. Great. We even have a little area where kids could play soccer. And, you know, I was watching that yesterday and I could tell these guys didn't know each other at the beginning. A lot of them were from some different countries and they're all just playing.
I'm thinking, well, those are the future, you know, World Cup kids right there. So it's that spirit, and we call it the spirit of America triumph. So that's being celebrated in a big way. So sports plays a big role in what we're doing.
Grand Prix
You know, we're doing all kinds of things with the football teams, baseball teams, basketball teams. And then also we're holding the freedom 250 Grand Prix here in Washington that will be going around the National Mall. You'll have the iconic backdrops like the Capitol, the White House, the Washington Monument, all of that.
From horses to horsepower
And the last time there was a race in Washington like this was Thomas Jefferson, but it was horses. So now we have real horsepower. And then and then I'm leaving this weekend to go to San Diego because we have the freedom 250 NASCAR race, which is around the big Navy base in Coronado.
Q. What inspired the idea for Freedom 250?
So when we think about it, the big thought is that, you know, this is not just looking back at our past. It's not even our present. It's our future. So the mission is to create a movement, a movement of pride, a movement of patriotism, a movement of spreading the good word of freedom around the world.
At the end of the day, that's what it's all about. And so our focus on creating that movement is to build a network. So that's the Freedom 250 network. That's all the people. That's all the institutions, the schools, government agencies, the faith-based organizations. And so you have that network.
The other thing you need then is the theme, and that's freedom. Right? Boils down to that because that creates opportunity and all of that. And then you need, you know, to add some value along the way to get the momentum. And that creates a movement. And I really think that's a real noble cause.
Q. And part of that I'm imagining is so many diverse cultures in this country. What is their contributions to all of this.
Yeah. I mean, I think that's what makes it so fun because we work a lot with all the different embassies here. I was at a great event the Armenians had. I mean, they were celebrating their innovators. Sweden. Japan. Korea. Japan came and gave us all these cherry blossom trees and all this stuff.
So everybody's participating. I think everybody's enjoying that. And you'll see around the world on July 4th, a lot of the different countries, monuments are going to light up in red, white and blue. So the Eiffel Tower, they're going to light it up red, white and blue. Now that is the color of the France. But still it's on the 4th of July for us.
Feedback so far
So far the feedback has been tremendous. I mean, and I'll tell you in a big way is this is, that everybody wants to volunteer. What can we do to help? And I can't even tell you how many emails I've got and how many people come up. How can we help you do this? And, I'll tell you another thing too. We had our rededicate 250 so that was a national jubilee of prayer, praise and thanksgiving.
And we had about 30,000 people on the mall. And one of our security guys, I talked to him. I said, thank you for your service, because I always say that to military guys or first responders. And he goes, ‘you know, that's really interesting.’ I go, ‘well, what's interesting about thanking you for your service?’ He goes, ‘you're about that 35th person who's done that today.’
And he goes, ‘see, I'm a policeman in New York. I've had more people today thank me for my service than in my 25 year career in New York.’
And so creating that good feeling of gratitude. Right. Because it's part of reflection, you know, I think about my American story. I mean, I grew up in Cleveland. My dad had a five-person machine shop, in the good times was just me and him in tough times as well. I was welding at age 12, and to be able to do the things that I've done in my career and then to be the CEO of freedom. 250. That's the ultimate. I feel like Forrest Gump. How did I even get here? And so it's a great privilege to lead the nation's 250th.
Theme of giving
Q. Rosie Rios [Chair of America 250] also talked about giving, volunteering, on the Fourth and beyond…their time, money, philanthropic efforts, just being patriots in every sense of the word and giving what you can, where you can.,…
Absolutely. Because if you think about freedom, it's got to be defended. It's got to be protected. And that takes service and sacrifice. I think the thing I love about Americans and all that is service, right? Pay it forward. Right? And give it back.
America is probably the most generous country in the world. And there's so many great individuals who do so many great things. You read about it, you see it, and then most of you, you probably don't hear about it, you know? But it's just little acts of kindness really go a long way.
Q. Just two more questions. So we've done 250 years. There's been hardships, there's been celebrations. Wonderful things have happened. There's been challenges. What do you think have been some of the challenges? And what do you see going forward in the years to come? How can we become an even greater nation?
Yes. Well, I, I really think we've got to be grateful for our freedom and we've got to be strong. And, you know, freedom is not something that is inherited now it's passed down, but it's got to be taken to that next level. So that's one of the reasons why we're focusing so much on young people when we do so much the schools K through 12 because this is the next generation.
These guys are going to write the American story. We want them to understand history. You know history doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes. Right. And so we want them to strengthen our freedom, strengthen our country and spread it around.
You know, if there's anything I learned as being undersecretary of state is that, you know, growing up at a white picket fence with a 2.5 kids in the dog, I was point five because I had two sisters. Um, that doesn't come for free.
And the natural order thing sometimes is the bad king, the dictator of the empire. And without, defending that every day, you know, it can go away. And that's one of the reasons why I have so much respect for the United States State Department, our military. And I think without the United States, there would be dozens of countries that would never even taste an ounce of freedom, and we cannot take it for granted,
Ben Franklin said “Republic's a great thing if you can keep it.” [The exact quote is “We gave you a Republic, if you can keep it.”]
Q. Last question. What would you like people to just take away after the banners come down and things go back to normal ? What do you want people to carry in their hearts going forward? Because obviously this year will end and we will be going into our 251st year of America.
Yeah, we want to keep this movement going forward. And I think the important thing to understand is democracy requires participation. And, you know, for freedom 250 we want everybody to participate. But in a bigger metaphor, it requires participation. So it's that giving back, right? It's paying your, you know, paying your country back.
It's service to others. All of that. That's what requires. And when you have everybody doing that, that makes a huge difference. And it's fun too!
A rising tide takes up all ships. And that's what we want. That's what we want to walk away with. Because I think at the end of the day, you know, people are going to look back on this year and they're not going to remember the press releases or the speeches. They're going to remember how they felt. And we want them to feel, you know, gratitude for the past and confidence in the future. Right? So that's our mission.
Q. That’s all my questions. Is there anything else you wanted to add to the conversation that you feel is important that I haven't asked you about?
Well, I think one of the things I want to say to the international community is, look, come to come to the United States this year, this will be the year. Come to the Great American State Fair because you're going to see all 50 states, all kinds of stuff, but also anywhere in the US. So and you know, what really makes the United States great is that diversity of people from all these different nations.
United States is like a United Nations. And that's something that's really great. And, you know, uh, my old German grandma, she would always say, you know, if you could speak another language, you're going to appreciate another culture. If you appreciate another culture, you can appreciate all of them.
