미국 국무부는 북한의 장거리탄도미사일 발사를 규탄하면서 이번 발사가 유엔 안보리 결의에 위배된다고 지적했습니다. 한국과 일본에 대한 방위 공약이 여전히 철통같다는 점도 거듭 확인했습니다. 함지하 기자가 보도합니다.
네드 프라이스 국무부 대변인은 15일 성명을 통해 “미국은 북한의 탄도미사일 발사를 규탄한다”고 밝혔습니다.
[프라이스 대변인] “The United States condemns the DPRK’s ballistic missile launch. This launch is a clear violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions, and demonstrates the threat the DPRK’s unlawful weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs pose to the DPRK’s neighbors, the region, international peace and security, and the global non-proliferation regime.”
그러면서 “이번 발사는 여러 유엔 안보리 결의에 대한 명백한 위반으로 북한의 불법적인 대량살상무기와 탄도미사일이 북한의 주변국과 역내, 국제 평화와 안보 그리고 국제 비확산 체제에 제기하는 위협을 보여준다”고 비판했습니다.
또한 "(북한의) 이번 행동은 북한이 불안정을 야기하는 이런 실험을 하는데 필요한 기술과 물질을 확보하는 것을 차단하기 위한 북한 관련 유엔 안보리 결의를 모든 국가가 충실하게 이행할 필요성을 보여준다"고 말했습니다.
[프라이스 대변인] “This action demonstrates the need for the all countries to fully implement DPRK related UN Security Council resolutions that are intended to prohibit the DPRK from acquiring the technologies and materials needed to carry out these destabilizing tests. Together, with the international community, we call on the DPRK to refrain from further provocations and engage in sustained and substantive dialogue. Our commitments to the defense of the Republic of Korea and Japan remain ironclad.”
이어 "국제사회와 함께 우리는 북한에 추가 도발을 자제하고 지속적이고 실질적인 대화에 관여할 것을 촉구한다"고 강조했습니다.
그러면서 "한국과 일본 방어에 대한 우리의 공약은 여전히 철통같다"고 프라이스 대변인은 덧붙였습니다.
앞서 한국 합동참모본부는 한반도 시각 16일 북한이 동해상으로 대륙간탄도미사일(ICBM) 추정 장거리탄도미사일을 발사했다고 밝혔습니다.
이번 미사일은 정상각도보다 높은 고각으로 발사돼 약 1천km를 비행한 뒤 동해상에 탄착했습니다.
북한의 장거리탄도미사일 발사는 지난달 18일 이후 26일 만이며, 탄도미사일 도발은 올해 6번째입니다.
