A double negative is when you use two negative words in the same clause of a sentence.
이중부정은 문장의 한 구절안에 부정어 2개를 사용하는 것 입니다.
There are two types of double negatives.
이중부정에는 2가지 종류가 있습니다.
The first kind of double negative is when two negative words form a positive statement.
첫번째 이중부정은 한 문장의 2개의 부정어가 긍정문을 만드는 것 입니다.
부정의 부정, 그러니가 긍정이 되는 것 입니다.
문장들어보겠습니다.
We can’t not go to sleep.
잠을 안잘 수 없습니다. 결국 잠을 자야한다는 뜻 입니다.
Time is not unlimited.
시간은 제한이 없는게 아닙니다. 결국 시간은 제한돼 있다. 시간은 유한하다는 의미입니다.
The negative “not” and the negative prefix “un” cancel each other out.
부정어 not –가 아니다와 부정형 접두사 un 2개가 한문장에 사용돼 부정의 의미가 취소됐습니다.
Politicians, lawyers and diplomats sometimes use this type of double negative in sensitive situations.
정치가들, 변호사들 그리고, 외교관들은 민감한 사안에 이중부정을 때로 사용하기도 합니다.
In 2012, President Obama spoke at United Nations about the Iran nuclear issue.
2012년 오바마 대통령은UN에서 이란 핵문제에관해 연설했습니다.
“America wants to resolve this issue through diplomacy, and we believe that there is still time and space to do so. But that time is not unlimited.”
미국은 이 문제를 외교로 풀기 원합니다. 그리고, 우리는 그렇게할 시간과 장소가 있다고 믿습니다. 그러나 시간은 제한이 없는게 아닙니다.
시간은 제한돼 있다. 시간은 유한하다.라는 뜻으로 Time is not unlimited.라고 표현했습니다.

두번째, 부정어 두개를 겹쳐 강한 부정문을 만드는 경우입니다.
For example, “I don’t know nothing.”
예를들어, 나는 아무것도 모릅니다.
When you place a verb between two negative words, the result is usually a stronger negative.
2개의 부정어 사이에 동사는 대개 강한 부정을 나타냅니다.
Don’t 와 nothing 사이에 know 알다라는 단어가 쓰여서 I don’t know nothing.나는 아무것도 모른다는 강한 부정의 뜻으로 사용됐습니다.
But, if you told an English teacher, “I don’t know nothing,” the teacher would probably correct you with, “I don’t know anything.”
그러나 만약 영어 선생님께, I don’t know nothing이라고 말하면, 선생님은 I don’t know anything.이라고 고쳐줄 겁니다.
미국에서는 격식을 차리지 않은 일상 대화에서 많이 씁니다.
