Pull it off
Jen: Wow, you got up so early!
Tony: Yes, the 5K race is coming up, so I’m training and exercising a lot.
Jen: That’s good! Wait…if I remember correctly, you finished in the top 10 last year didn’t you?
Tony: Yes but I injured my ankle after that competition so it’s been taking a lot more training than before.
Jen: You’ll be fine and I believe you can pull it off.
Tony: Thanks.
“Wow, you got up so early! 그러자 Tony는 “Yes, the 5K race is coming up 응 5K 경기가 곧 열리거든 so I’m training and exercising a lot 그래서 열심히 훈련하고 운동하는 중이야”라고 하네요. 제가 “That’s good! Wait, if I remember correctly, you finished in the top 10 last year didn’t you? 라고 묻자 Tony는 “Yes 응, 맞아 but I injured my ankle after that competition 그런데 그 경기에서 발목 부상을 당했지 뭐야 so it’s been taking a lot more training than before 그래서 그전보다 더 열심히 훈련하고 있어”라고 하네요. 그러자 제가 “You’ll be fine and I believe you can pull it off 괜찮을 거야 그리고 나는 네가 잘 해내리라 믿어”라고 용기를 줬습니다. Now, we’ll listen to the conversation again. Listen carefully.

오늘의 영어표현은 Pull it off입니다.

‘Pull it off’ means that you succeed in doing something that is difficult, and to achieve something that either no one else seemed able to do or that people never expected you to accomplish. Here is an example. Asking for a raise is nerve-wrecking, 월급을 올려 달라고 하는 것은 정말 진땀이 나는 일이죠, even if you know you deserve it. So say that your colleague, who has worked less than a year at the company, managed to successfully receive a raise. That is when you can say, “You asked for a raise and the boss gave it to you? How did you pull it off? Now we’ll listen to this conversation for the last time.
