지난 주에는 ‘Alabama’ 주의 ‘Dothan’이라는 도시하고, ‘Waffle House’라는 음식점에 대해 소개해주셨는데요, 오늘은 어디를 소개해 주시겠습니까?
Eufaula, Alabama.
(앨라바마 주의 Eufaula라는 곳입니다.)
Eufaula, Alabama is spelled E-u-f-a-u-l-a.
(‘Eufaula’ 철자는 e, u,, f, a, u, l, a 입니다.)
And it's a beautiful Southern city, very small city in Alabama that you have to go through.
(그리고 그 곳은 플로리다에 가려면 거쳐가야 되는 앨라바마 중의 아주 아름답고 작은 앨러바마 중의 도시입니다.)
And I think the most famous thing that Eufaula is famous for is the very large and beautifully restored antebellum homes and businesses.
(유팔라가 유명한 것은 아주 크고 아름다운 복원된 남북 전쟁 이전의 건축물들과 상가들 때문입니다.)

Those are the old Southern mansions.
(그들은 오래된 남부지역 대저택들입니다.)
Remember the movie, 'Gone with the Wind' and the big houses?
('바람과 함께 사라지다'라는 영화와 거기 나오는 커다란 저택들 기억하세요?)
Those are called antebellum houses.
(그 저택들이 ‘antebellum’ 저택들입니다. )
But they’re in the old style, and many of them have been restored. And they look just like they did probably when the movie was made, “Gone with the Wind”.
(그들은 낡아서, 많은 저택들이 복원된 것들입니다. ‘바람과 함께 사라지다’라는 영화를 촬영했던 당시의 모습과 똑 같아 보일 것입니다.)
And they are just beautiful.

They have big big wide porches, and people sit out on the porches.

And they look like they did back in the 1800’s.

The town looks very much quaint, and the beautiful houses are fun to watch and look at as you drive through the town.
(그 마을은 무척 고풍스러워 보이며, 마을을 운전하여 지나가면서 아름다운 저택들을 구경하는 일은 즐거운 일입니다.)
지난 시간에 남부 음식에 관한 이야기를 했었는데요, 남부에서는 돼지족도 잘 알려진 음식이죠?
Ham hocks are very famous in the South.
(돼지족은 남부에서 아주 유명한 음식입니다.)
And they like to serve them with mixed with greens: turnip greens, spinach greens, and any other mustard greens, any other kind of greens are cooked a long time so that they are very tender.
(돼지족은 채소와 같이 나옵니다. 무, 시금치, 겨자 등, 다른 채소 잎과 같이 오래 삶아서 부드럽게 요리합니다.)
And then they add ham hock and maybe a little sugar to take away the bitter taste that might be in the greens.
(그리고 거기에 돼지족을 넣고, 설탕도 약간 첨가해서 채소에 있을 수 있는 쓴 맛을 없앱니다.)
한국에서 돼지족에 여러 가지 재료를 넣고 삶아서 쫄깃쫄깃하게 먹는데요, 남부식 돼지족 요리는 채소를 넣고 푹 삶아서 부드럽게 만들어 먹습니다.
They are very tender. They cook them a long long time, and then the ham hocks get very very tender.
(남부 돼지족 요리는 무척 부드럽습니다. 아주 오랜 시간 삶아서 돼지족이 무척 부드러워집니다.)
The other thing that’s very famous in the South to eat is fried green tomatoes. This time of year, in September and October, when the tomato plants are gonna be getting done, people pick all the green tomatoes. They slice them and bread them a little bit and fry them.
(그리고 남부에서 유명한 또 다른 먹거리는 파란 토마토 튀김입니다. 매년 이맘때쯤인 9월과 10월에 토마토 나무가 생명을 다해갈 때, 사람들은 파란 토마토를 따서 잘라 튀김 옷을 약간 입혀서 튀깁니다.)
In the South, it's very famous to eat the fried green tomatoes.
(남부에서는 파란 토마토 튀김을 먹는 것으로 아주 유명합니다.)
And I believe there was a movie called 'Fried Green Tomatoes'.
('파란토마토 튀김'이라는 영화도 있었던 것으로 압니다.)

Yes, the South has famous dishes well known to people in the South.

Biscuits are very famous. People in the South have biscuits for breakfast, and with lunch, and with dinner.
(비스킷이 아주 유명합니다. 남부 사람들은 아침식사와 점심 저녁 식사 때 비스킷을 먹습니다.)
여기서 말하는 비스킷은 얇고 바삭바삭한 과자류의 비스킷이 아니라 밀가루에 소다를 넣어서 구운 둥글고 두꺼운 아침 식사용 밀가루 빵을 말합니다.
They like to have sweet potatoes.
(그리고 그 곳 사람들은 고구마를 좋아합니다.)
Corn bread is very famous. Watermelon is very famous in the South.
(옥수수 빵이 아주 유명합니다. 남부지역에는 수박이 아주 유명합니다.)
There's a special cake that people like to make, and that's called red velvet cake. And it actually looks red, it's made with cocoa. And it tastes a little chocolaty, but it's called red velvet cake.
(남부 사람들이 즐겨 만들어 먹는 아주 특별한 케이크가 있는데, 빨간 벨벳 케이크라고 부르는 것입니다. 실제로 빨간색인데, 코코아로 만듭니다. 초콜릿 맛이 좀 나지만 붉은 벨벳 케이크라고 부릅니다.)
남부에는 catfish, 즉 메기 요리도 흔하다고 하더군요. 한국에서는 메기매운탕을 주로 끓여서 먹는데요, 미국에서는 메기를 주로 튀겨 먹지요?
Catfish are usually breaded and fried, deep fried, and those are famous.
(메기는 보통 빵가루를 입혀서 기름을 많이 넣고 튀깁니다. 그 음식이 유명하지요.)

Catfish nuggets or catfish with the bone in it is very famous. And usually it’s served with hush puppies.

*hush puppy: 미국남부 음식으로 옥수수로 만든 빵.
허쉬 파피라고 해서 강아지한테 조용히 하라는 말인 줄 알았는데, 그게 아니고 음식 이름이군요.
Hush puppies are a mixture of flour and corn meal, with usually onions and other things added, and those are deep fried with the fish.
(허쉬 파피는 밀가루와 옥수수가루를 섞어서 만듭니다. 보통 양파와 다른 것들을 가미해서 생선과 같이 기름을 많이 넣고 튀깁니다.)
