North Korea to Withdraw Diplomats Accused of Drug Trafficking - 2004-12-10

Bulgaria says North Korea will withdraw two diplomats from its embassy in Sofia after they were arrested for drug trafficking in Turkey.

The two men (Ryang Thae Won and Kim Song Jin) were deported from Turkey Thursday after Ankara determined they had diplomatic immunity.

Bulgaria said it recently received a note from the North Korean embassy in Sofia, saying the two diplomats would be withdrawn. It is not clear when the two will leave Bulgaria.

The diplomats were arrested in Istanbul Sunday, along with two Turkish nationals. Police seized more than 600,000 narcotic pills, worth about seven million dollars.

The North Korean embassy in Bulgaria generally handles diplomatic relations between Pyongyang and Turkey.
