At Least 11 Killed In Kashmir Landmine Attack - 2004-12-05

Indian police say 11 people, including nine soldiers, have been killed in a landmine explosion in India-controlled Kashmir.

Authorities said today (Sunday) a jeep carrying the soldiers was blown apart when it ran over the landmine late Saturday in Pulwama, south of Kashmir's summer capital, Srinagar.

Kashmir's pro-Pakistan rebel group Hizbul Mujahedin claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a separate incident early today in the disputed Himalayan region, an army spokesman says Indian troops shot dead three militants who had taken shelter in a mosque.

Guerilla violence has increased in Kashmir in recent weeks.

Violence in the region has claimed at least 30,000 lives since the start of a revolt against India in 1989. India blames neighboring Pakistan for supporting the militants -- a claim Islamabad denies.
