U.S. and Iraqi forces are still battling insurgents in Fallujah today (Sunday), although senior officials say the offensive against the rebel-held city is nearly complete.

Insurgents are still putting up strong resistance in a southern section of the city, while coalition forces control the rest of Fallujah.

With the fight for control of Fallujah now in its seventh day, Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi says he expects the major part of the operation to end today with a clear-cut victory over the insurgents.

(U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says there are still "pockets of resistance, and areas that will be difficult.")

A senior Iraqi security official (Kassim Daoud) says at least 1,000 guerrillas have been killed and another 200 captured during the past week. U.S. officials say at least 22 American troops and five Iraqi soldiers have died.
