Chinese authorities have stepped up inspections of poultry markets after the death of a 19-year-old woman from the lethal strain of the bird flu virus.
Inspectors sprayed disinfectant at markets in Beijing's neighboring province of Hebei, where the woman bought nine ducks. Health officials have also stepped up inspections of poultry markets and slaughterhouses in Beijing.
Huang Yanqing died Monday at a Beijing hospital after falling ill in late December. She is the first person in China to die of the H5N1 strain since last February, when a 44-year-old woman died in southern Guangdong province.
The World Health Organization says this latest case does not appear to be a human-to-human transmission.
