U.S. President-elect Barack Obama meets later today(Monday) with congressional leaders to work on a large government spending package designed to help the country's economy.

Mr. Obama, who returned to Washington Sunday night, says he will ask Congress to spend money to improve roads, bridges, mass transit, and schools. He has also proposed reducing taxes on low- and middle-income Americans. The president-elect says the plan will create three million jobs. It is expected to cost more than 750-billion dollars.

House Majority (Democratic) Leader Steny Hoyer said Sunday (in a television interview on "Fox News Sunday")the stimulus plan is not likely to be ready when the new president takes office on January 20th. But he said it could be done by early or mid-February.

Senate Minority (Republican) Leader Mitch McConnell said he is concerned about the plan being passed too fast. McConnell said (on ABC's "This Week" program)he hopes Congress will allow bipartisan input on the package.
