유럽연합의 대표들이 전투가 벌어지고 있는 팔레스타인 가자지구에서 휴전에 합의하도록 팔레스타인 자치정부와 이스라엘을 설득하기 위해 4일 중동을 방문했습니다.
유럽연합은 체코의 카렐 슈와젠버그 외무장관을 대외관계위원회 위원들과 함께 중동에 파견했습니다.
유럽연합 대표단은 5일 이스라엘의 에후드 올메르트 총리와 시몬 페레즈 대통령을 예루살렘에서 만나기 전인 지난 4일 이집트를 방문했습니다. 대표단은 이집트를 방문한 후 오는 6일 요르단강 서안의 라마야 지역과 요르단을 방문하는 것을 끝으로 중동방문 일정을 마칩니다.
유럽연합은 프랑스의 니콜라 사르코지 대통령도 유럽연합 대표단과 함께 라마야에서 마흐무드 압바스 팔레스타인 자치정부 수반을 만날 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 이후 사르코지 프랑스 대통령은 또 이스라엘, 이집트, 시리아 그리고 레바논을 방문할 예정입니다.
현재 유럽연합은 팔레스타인 자치정부에 가장 많은 원조를 제공하고 있습니다.

European Union representatives are traveling to the Middle East today (Sunday) in hopes of persuading Israeli and Palestinian leaders to move toward a humanitarian truce in the Gaza Strip.
The EU says it is sending Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenburg along with the EU's external relations commissioner and Schwarzenburg's French and Swedish counterparts.
It says the team will visit Egypt today before meeting with Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem on Monday. The team will then go to the West Bank town of Ramallah and finish up its Middle East trip in Jordan on Tuesday.
The EU says French President Nicolas Sarkozy will also attend the meeting in Ramallah with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Mr. Sarkozy also plans to visit Israel, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon this week.
The European Union is the biggest foreign aid donor to the Palestinian territories.
