아시프 알리 자르다리 파키스탄 대통령은 지난달 1백70명 이상의 사망자를 낳은 뭄바이 동시다발 테러의 테러범들을 격퇴하기 위해서는 인도와의 평화협상을 지속해야 한다고 밝혔습니다.
자르다리 대통령은 뉴욕타임스지 기고를 통해 파키스탄은 이번 공격에 개입된 이들에 대한 추적, 체포, 재판, 징벌 등의 의무를 다하기 위해 총력을 기울이고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
자르다리 대통령은 지난 7일 뭄바이 테러의 배후로 지목된 무장단체 '라시카르 에 토이바'의 훈련캠프를 급습해 몇 명의 용의자를 체포했다고 덧붙였습니다. 파키스탄 보안군은 8일에도 무장단체의 근거지를 급습하고 이번 테러의 주모자로 지목되고 있는 '자키 우르 레먼 라크히비'를 포함한 수 명을 체포한 것으로 전해졌습니다.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari says the peace process with India must move forward to foil the goals of the terrorists behind last month's attack in Mumbai that killed more than 170 people.
In an opinion piece in "The New York Times" today (Tuesday), Mr. Zardari also vows his country is committed to the pursuit, arrest, trial and punishment of anyone involved in the attacks.
He said several suspects were arrested in raids Sunday. More operations were carried out Monday against militant groups linked to the Mumbai attacks.
Among those reported to be detained is an alleged planner of the Mumbai attacks (Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi).
Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi says his country will not hand the suspects over to India. He says Pakistan will take action against them in its own legal system.
