체코 상원이 27일 자국내 미국 미사일방어망 (MD) 기지 설치를 허용하는 조약을 승인했습니다. 체코 상원은 이날 표결을 실시해 찬성 41, 반대 32표로 이 조약을 통과시켰습니다.
미국과 체코간의 미사일 방어망 기지 조약은 앞으로 하원을 통과한후 바츨라프 클리우스 대통령의 서명을 거쳐야만 발효됩니다. 그러나 현재 하원에서는 연정에 참여하는 정당들이 많고 정치적 변수가 많아 조약 통과가 쉽지 않을 것으로 관측되고 있습니다. 체코 현지 소식통들은 미국의 오바마 행정부가 출범하는 내년 1월 20일 이후에나 투표가 이뤄질 것으로 보고 있습니다.
미국은 체코에 미사일 방어망 기지를 설치해 10여기의 요격 미사일을 배치하기를 희망하고 있습니다. 그러나 러시아는 체코의 미사일 기지가 러시아의 안보를 위태롭게 한다며 이에 반대하고 있습니다.
The upper house of the Czech Republic's parliament, the Senate, has approved agreements with the United States on deploying an anti-missile defense system in central Europe.
To take effect, the agreements still need the approval of the lower house, where a close vote is expected. Czech officials say they believe that vote will come only after U.S. President-elect Barack Obama takes office January 20th.
Russia strongly opposes the U.S. plan for deployment of 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and tracking radar in the Czech Republic as a threat to its security.
Earlier this week, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin repeated his country's criticism of the plans and urged Mr. Obama to give up the deployments.
U.S. officials insist the planned system is aimed at protecting U.S. allies in Europe from potential attacks by Iran.
