U.S. President George Bush is urging Congress to pass a 700-billion-dollar
bailout plan for the financial sector, saying it will prevent the crisis from
spreading throughout the economy.
The president spoke today (Monday)
hours before the U.S. stock markets opened for trading. He was seeking to
assure investors that even though the legislation is the result of hard-fought
negotiations with lawmakers, it still addresses the root causes of the
crisis.
Mr. Bush says passing the measure will "send a strong signal" to
markets in the United States and around the world that the country is serious
about restoring confidence in the financial system. He also says the bill will
help the economy start to grow.
Investors around the world are worried
the plan will not boost the U.S. economy.
Major Asian stock markets
closed sharply lower, while European markets were lower in midday
trading.
The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on the
massive bailout bill later today.
