Israeli officials say Russian President Dmitri Medvedev phoned Israeli
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Wednesday, apparently to ease tensions between the
two nations.
Mr. Olmert's office says the leaders discussed Mideast peace efforts and Syrian
President Bashar Assad's planned visit to Russia this week.
Mr. Assad has told a Russian newspaper (Kommersant)that he wants to
boost Syria's military cooperation with Moscow. Russian arms sales to Syria
have angered Israel and the United States, who accuse Damascus of supporting
terrorism.
Israeli officials say Mr. Olmert and Mr. Medvedev also discussed the Russian conflict
with Georgia. Russia's military accuses Israel of supplying Georgia with
military vehicles and explosives and training Georgian troops.
The Israeli government says it does not supply arms to other countries, but
allows private companies to sell equipment and services with official approval.
