Polls have closed in Zimbabwe, after a presidential run-off widely dismissed as a charade to keep President Robert Mugabe in power.

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai withdrew from the poll earlier this week, saying violence against his supporters made the election impossible. In an interview today (Friday) with VOA (English to Africa), he denounced the run-off as a "one-man race whose outcome is already known."

Many residents of the capital, Harare, said ruling party militia threatened them with harm if they did not vote. Witnesses say turnout was strong at two Harare polling stations (Mbare and Harare South) but that other stations saw only a trickle of voters.

In an e-mail early today, Tsvangirai had urged supporters to boycott the election but said they should vote if their lives were in danger.

President Mugabe cast his ballot today in Harare, telling reporters he felt "optimistic." The 84-year-old president rejected calls from the West and fellow African leaders to postpone the election because of the violence.

The European Union and the United States have condemned today's (Friday's) election in Zimbabwe, calling it a sham devoid of legitimacy.

An EU spokesman (John Clancy) told VOA the election is "hollow" and will not reflect the will of the Zimbabwean people.

In Washington, a State Department spokesman (Tom Casey) said the election is a "sham process" being conducted in a climate of intimidation and fear.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, speaking in Japan, said U.N. Security Council members will consult after the election on the next steps.

The human rights group Amnesty International urged the African Union to "strongly and openly condemn" election-related human rights violations.

The AU's top official, Jean Ping, said he is convinced "the Zimbabwe problem" can be solved in a credible way. He appealed for time for AU heads of state to discuss the situation.
