남아프리카 공화국의 타보 움베키 대통령이 오늘 짐바브웨를 방문해, 오는 27일 야당 당수 모건 창기라이와의 대통령 결선투표를 앞두고 있는 로버트 무가베 대통령을 만납니다.
움베키 대통령은 남아프리카 개발공동체로부터 짐바브웨의 정치위기 당사자인 두 정파를 중재하도록 임무를 부여 받았습니다.
비판론자들은 그러나 움베키 대통령의 중재 노력이 실효를 거두지 못하고 있다고 지적하고 있습니다.
한편 짐바브웨 관영 언론은 어제 정부가 식량지원과 에이즈 퇴치 운동을 벌이고 있는 국제 구호단체의 활동을 다시 허용했다고 보도했습니다. 짐바브웨 정부는 이달초 국제 구호단체들이 야당인 민주주의변화동맹을 지지한다는 의혹을 이유로 이들의 구호활동을 금지한 바 있습니다.

South African President Thabo Mbeki will visit Zimbabwe today (Wednesday)
for talks with President Robert Mugabe, who faces opposition leader Morgan
Tsvangirai in a presidential run-off election June 27th.
Mr. Mbeki was appointed by the South African Development Community to mediate
between the two factions as Zimbabwe's violent political crisis rages on.
Critics say the South African president's efforts have been ineffective.
Also Wednesday, Zimbabwe state media report the government has lifted a ban on
some aid groups operating food and AIDS programs in the country.
The government imposed the ban earlier this month out of suspicion that the
organizations were supporting the opposition, the Movement for Democratic
Change.
In a separate development, United Nations Human Rights Chief Louise Arbour says
one of her staff members was expelled from Zimbabwe on Tuesday. That was the
same day Mr. Mugabe met with a special U.N. envoy (Haile Menkerios) to
discuss the political crisis.
