U.S. first lady Laura Bush has made a previously unannounced visit to Afghanistan to highlight progress in the war-torn nation and to rally for support from the international community.
The first lady, who met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul today (Sunday), said the international community cannot drop Afghanistan at what she called "this very crucial time."
Her trip came before a donors' conference this week in Paris, where the United States will urge the international community to pledge aid for Afghanistan.
During her visit, Mrs. Bush flew by helicopter from Kabul to Bamiyan, where she viewed the ruins of two ancient Buddha statues destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. She also met with U.S. troops stationed at Bagram air force base near Kabul where she offered repeated thanks for their efforts in the country.
