중동을 순방 중인 조지 부시 미국 대통령이 15일 이스라엘 국회에서 행한 연설은 민주당 대선 주자인 바락 오바마 후보 지지자들로부터 거센 항의를 받았습니다. 그러나 백악관은 부시 대통령이 오바마 후보를 겨냥해 발언을 하지 않았다고 밝혔습니다.
이날 이스라엘 국회에서 부시 대통령은 미국이 “테러분자 및 과격분자들과 협상을 해야한다고 믿는 사람들이 있으며, 마치 협상에서 기발한 토의가 이뤄져 테러분자 및 과격분자들이 과거로부터 지속된 잘못을 인정할 것이라고 생각한다”고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 이러한 생각은 “역사를 통해 거듭 신임을 잃은 유화책을 통한 잘못된 위안”이라고 말했습니다.
민주당의 차기 미국 대선 후보 경선에서 우위를 점하고 있는 오바마 후보는, 만일 당선된다면 미국과 대치 중인 이라크, 시리아, 북한, 베네주엘라, 쿠바 등의 지도자들과 만날 용의가 있다고 밝혔습니다.오바마 후보 명의로 발표된 성명서는 부시 대통령이 오바마 후보에 대해 “잘못된 정치적 공격”을 감행했으며, 부시 대통령은 오바마 후보가 테러분자에 대한 포용정책을 지지한 적이 없다는 것을 알고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.

Comments that President Bush made in Jerusalem today (Thursday) have drawn a sharp response from supporters of Barack Obama, but the White House says the remarks were not intended as criticism of the Democratic presidential hopeful.
Addressing the Israeli parliament, Mr. Bush said there are some who seem to believe the United States should negotiate "with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along."
Mr. Bush called this "the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."
Obama, currently the leading Democratic candidate for the U.S. presidency, has said he would, if elected, be willing to meet with leaders of Iran and other countries at odds with the United States, such as Syria, North Korea, Venezuela and Cuba.
A statement issued in Obama's name accused the president of launching a "false political attack" against the candidate, adding that Mr. Bush knows that Obama has never supported engagement with terrorists.
