세계은행이 주요 쌀 수출국들의 수출 제한을 경고함에 따라 23일 국제 쌀 가격이 사상 최고치를 기록했습니다.
세계은행 당국자는 기자들에게 태국이 다른 쌀 주요 생산국들로부터 수출 물량을 제한하라는 압력을 받고 있다며 이는 사우디아라비아가 원유 생산량을 줄이는 것과 마찬가지라고 밝혔습니다.
세계은행의 이같은 우려에도 불구하고 태국의 싸막 순다라베즈 총리는 태국은 쌀 값을 폭등시키는 어떠한 조치도 취하지 않겠다고 밝혔습니다.
그러나 무역업자들은 이 날 시카고 상품거래소에서 쌀 45kg가 25달러에 거래되는 등 2% 이상 쌀 가격이 오름에 따라 태국 정부의 이같은 발표에 크게 동요하지 않았습니다.

Rice prices hit a record high Wednesday after the World Bank warned that the world's largest rice exporter could start cutting shipments.
A senior World Bank official (East Asia and Pacific Department Vice President James Adams) told reporters Thailand is under pressure to join other major rice producers and begin limiting exports. He says that would "be like Saudi Arabia reducing oil exports."
Despite the World Bank's concern, Thailand's prime minister (Samak Sundaravej) says his country will do nothing to distort prices. Commodities traders seemed unimpressed, however, as the price of rice rose more than two percent on the Chicago Board of Trade, to a record high of almost 25 dollars per 45 kilograms.
Earlier, the leaders of Japan and the European Union called for urgent action on food prices. During a summit in Tokyo (Wednesday), they warned that soaring prices could hurt developing nations' efforts to overcome poverty.
