이라크의 누리 알 말라키 총리는 이라크 남부 도시 바스라에서 시아파 민병대를 소탕하기 위해 벌인 이라크 정부군의 작전이 성공적이었다고 평가했습니다.
말라키 총리는 1만 명의 병사를 추가 모집해서 바스라 시의 치안을 강화하겠다고 덧붙였습니다.
한편 지난 주 바스라 시에서 벌어진 정부군과 시아파 민병대간의 전투로 지난 달 이라크의 사상자 수가 지난 해 8월 이후 가장 높게 나타났습니다.
이라크 내무부와 국방부, 보건부의 자료를 종합한 결과, 지난 2월보다 두 배가 많은 약 1천1백 명의 이라크 민간인과 보안군이 3월 한 달동안 사망했다고 이라크 관리들이 밝혔습니다. 이 가운데 민간인 사망자 수는 9백 23명에 달한 것으로 조사됐습니다.
지난 주 과격 시아파 지도자 모크타다 알 사드르가 이끄는 민병대와 이라크 정부군간의 전투로 적어도 4백 명이 숨졌습니다.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki says the military operation to crack down against Shi'ite militias in the southern city of Basra was a success.
Mr. Maliki also said today that his office will recruit 10-thousand more troops and take steps to enhance public services in the city.
Iraqi officials said the recent fighting between Shi'ite militias and security forces in the south of the country helped make March the deadliest month for Iraqis since August 2007.
Combined figures from Iraq's interior, defense and health ministries show nearly 11,079 Iraqi civilians and security personnel were killed last month. That figure is nearly double the number of Iraqi deaths tallied in February.
The March figure includes about 923 civilian deaths.
At least 400 people were killed in the last week during fighting between militants loyal to Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and Iraqi and coalition forces in Baghdad and the southern city of Basra.
