President Bush has accepted Russian President Vladimir Putin's invitation to meet in a Black Sea resort to talk about U.S. plans to build a missile defense system in central Europe.

Mr. Bush told reporters Wednesday he will meet with Mr. Putin April 6th in Sochi at the end of his trip to Ukraine, Croatia, and the NATO summit in Bucharest.

Mr. Bush said he knows Washington's European partners will be relieved if a missile defense deal can be reached with Moscow.

National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley says Mr. Bush will try to assure Mr. Putin the system is not aimed at Russia but is meant to protect Europe from a possible attack from such rogue states as Iran.

Hadley says the White House would like to see the United States, Russia, and Europe work together as equal partners to defend Europe and Russia from threats from the Middle East.

The United States wants to place interceptor missiles and radar in Poland and the Czech Republic. Russia has strongly opposed the plan as a threat to its security. It has said the system could also set off a new arms race.
