Burmese democracy activists are calling on the public to vote "no" when the country's military-ruled government holds a referendum to approve a new constitution in May.
In a statement today (Friday), a group called the 88 Generation Students urged voters to not support the draft constitution, arguing that it would only prolong the military's domination of the country.
The group, which is made up of former students who led the country's 1988 national democracy uprising, told voters they do not need to be afraid. The group added that authorities have no right to arrest individuals for voting against the charter.
The Burmese government recently announced plans to hold a national referendum in May to approve a new constitution, and then hold general elections in 2010.
