말레이시아에서 8일 치러진 총선에서 집권당인 압둘라 아마드 바다위 총리의 국민전선연합이 의석의 과반수를 차지해 승리했다고 현지 선거 관리들이 밝혔습니다.
그러나 이번 총선에서는 야당이 의석수를 크게 늘리면서 국민전선연합은 지난 50년간 집권해오면서 가장 낮은 득표율을 기록했습니다. 또 집권당이 차지해온 3분의 2의 의석이 위협을 받은 것은 이번이 처음입니다.
분석가들은 말레이시아 정부의 특정 종교와 소수민족에 대한 차별정책으로 인해 야당의 득표율이 올랐다고 말했습니다. 야당은 말레이시아의 13개 주 가운데 페낭과 케다 주 등, 적어도 두개의 주를 새로 장악했고 켈란탄 주에서도 승리해 권력을 유지했습니다.

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's ruling coalition is expected to remain in power in today's (Saturday's) general election, but returns show big gains for opposition parties.
The ruling National Front is expected to form a new majority coalition when all the votes are counted. But it is still unclear whether it will keep the two-thirds majority it has held for most of its roughly 50 year rule.
Analysts say voter anger over religious and ethnic discrimination has fueled election gains by opposition parties.
At least one of the National Front's cabinet ministers (Samy Vellu) has lost his seat in Parliament.
Opposition parties also won control of the Penang and Kedah state legislatures and retained control of the legislature in the northeastern state of Kelantan.
Kelantan had been the only one of Malaysia's 13 states in which an opposition party held a majority.
Official election results are not expected until Sunday.
