U.S. nuclear experts just back from North Korea say Pyongyang wants promised energy aid and removal from a U.S. terrorism and sanctions blacklist before it offers full disclosure of its nuclear program.
The team included a Stanford University physicist, a former State Department official and a staffer for U.S. Senator Richard Lugar. Their trip was not officially sanctioned by the U.S. government.
They say North Korea has slowed the removal of nuclear fuel rods from its Yongbyon reactor. Up to 80 of the rods can be safely removed every day, but the North Koreans are said to be removing only 30 a day.
With only about 14-hundred of the eight thousand rods in the reactor removed, the experts say it could take months before the reactor is shut down.
An agreement reached in October called for the reactor to be fully shut down by the end of last year.
