케빈 러드 호주 총리가 과거 호주 정부의 원주민(Aborigine) 탄압정책에 대해 처음으로 공식 사과했습니다.
러드 총리는 13일 의회에서 호주의 역대 정부와 의회의 법률과 정책들로 인해 호주 원주민들에 깊은 슬픔과 고통이 안겨진 것을 인정한다며 이에 대해 사과한다고 밝혔습니다.
러드 총리는 특별히 원주민과 토레스 섬 어린이들을 ‘동화 정책’이라는 미명 아래 부모와 생이별해 강제로 백인 가정에서 양육되도록 한 정책에 대해서 사과한다고 말했습니다.
그는 또 다른 호주인들보다 평균 수명이 17년이상 짧은 호주 원주민들의 삶의 질을 높일 것을 약속했습니다.
호주 원주민들을 포함한 수천명이 이날의 역사적인 행사를 축하하기 위해 수도 켄버라에 집결했습니다. 이날 러드 총리의 의회 발표는 호주 전국에 텔레비전으로 중계됐습니다.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has made a historic apology for past mistreatment of the country's Aboriginal people.
Mr. Rudd delivered the apology in parliament (today) Wednesday, acknowledging the profound suffering caused by past Australian laws and policies.
On behalf of the government, he expressed remorse for the indignity and degradation inflicted on Australia's indigenous people.
Mr. Rudd said he especially apologized for the suffering caused by the removal of Aboriginal and Torres Island children -- the so-called "Stolen Generation" -- from their families.
He also pledged to raise the living standards of Aborigines, who have a life expectancy 17 years shorter than other Australians.
Thousands, including many Aborigines, gathered in Australia's capital, Canberra to celebrate the apology, which was shown on large screens in major cities across the country.
