일본 정부는 국제고래잡이협회가 연구 목적으로 매년 일정한 양의 고래잡이를 허용한다는 입장입니다. 하지만 이렇게 잡은 고래고기는 상업적으로 팔리고 있습니다.
한편 일본에서 8일 실시된 여론조사에 따르면 일본인의 65%는 고래잡이를 지지한다고 말했습니다. 특히 응답자 중 절반 이상은 고래를 식용으로 사용하는데 동의한다고 답했습니다.

Japan says it will complain to Australia about its release of graphic photographs of whales being killed by a Japanese fleet in Antarctic waters.
Japanese Agricultural Minister Masatoshi Wakabayashi says Japan will express its "regret" over the release of the photographs, and urge Australia to calmly handle the issue.
Australia says the pictures show a whale and her calf being dragged onto a Japanese ship after being harpooned. Officials there have described the images as "sickening and sad."
Japan argues that international whaling conventions allow it to catch a specific quota of whales each year for scientific research. Meat from the catch is sold commercially, but Japanese officials deny profit is a goal.
In a newly released public opinion poll today (Friday) in Japan, 65 percent of Japanese say they support the whaling program. More than half of those surveyed say they agree that whales can be used for food.
