일본 정부는 최근 남극에서의 흑등고래 포획 계획을 유예하겠다고 21일 밝혔습니다.
마치무라 노부타카 관방장관은 이 날 가진 기자회견에서 일본은 미국이 의장국을 맡고 있는 국제포경위원회 당국자들과 만난 뒤 흑등고래 포획을 중지하겠다고 밝혔습니다.
마치무라 장관은 유예 기간은 1, 2년이 될 것이라고 밝혔습니다.
일본의 고래잡이 어선은 지난 주 흑등고래 50마리를 비롯해 9백 마리가 넘는 고래를 포획하기 위해 출항했었습니다. 일본은 1960년대 이래 흑등고래를 포획해 왔으며, 흑등고래는 국제적인 보호를 받고 있는 종입니다.
케빈 루드 신임 총리가 이끄는 호주 정부는 앞서 일본의 고래 포획을 국제법정에 세우기 위한 증거수집을 위해 항공기와 비행기를 보내겠다고 밝혔었습니다.
The Japanese government says it is dropping plans to kill dozens of humpback whales as part of its latest whale hunt in the Antarctic.
Government spokesman Nobutaka Machimura told reporters in Tokyo today (Friday) Japan is suspending its hunt of humpback whales after talks with officials from the International Whaling Commission, which is currently chaired by the United States.
Machimura says the moratorium will last between one and two years.
Japan's whaling fleet was dispatched last week to hunt and kill more than 900 whales, including 50 humpbacks. It would have been the country's first humpback whale hunt since the 1960s, when the species was placed under international protection after it was hunted to near extinction.
The newly-elected government of Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd pledged to send planes and ships to monitor the Japanese fleet to gather evidence for a possible international court challenge.
