국제인권단체 '휴먼 라이츠 워치'는 버마 군부의 지난 9월 민주주의 시위대에 대한 유혈 진압 당시 20명이 숨졌다고 7일 발표했습니다.
이는 버마 군부가 밝힌 것보다 두 배 많은 수치입니다.
'휴먼 라이츠 워치'는 이 날 발표한 보고서에서 버마 양곤에서 목격자 1백여 명 이상을 대상으로 진행한 인터뷰에 기초해 이같이 밝혔습니다. '휴먼 라이츠 워치'는 양곤 외곽에 대한 정보는 얻기 어려웠으며, 양곤 밖에서도 더 많은 사람들이 사망했다고 밝혔습니다.
'휴먼 라이츠 워치'는 또 병사들이 학생과 민간인, 불교 승려 등으로 구성된 시위대 해산을 위해 실탄과 고무 총, 최루탄을 사용했다고 밝혔습니다.
유엔은 최소 15명이 당시 유혈 진압으로 사망했다고 밝힌 바 있습니다. 버마 군부는 보안 병력이 당시 3천명 가까이 체포했으나 80명을 제외하고 모두 석방했다고 밝혔습니다.
그러나 '휴먼 라이츠 워치'는 수백명이 아직 억류돼 있다고 밝혔습니다.
Human Rights Watch says Burmese soldiers killed at least 20 people during a violent crackdown on pro-democracy protests in September -- twice as many as the ruling military government has admitted.
The U.S.-based rights group issued a report on the crackdown today (Friday), based on interviews with more than 100 witnesses in the main city of Rangoon. It says it was unable to gather any information outside the city, where the group says many more people may have been killed.
Human Rights Watch says soldiers used live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, including students, civilians and Buddhist monks.
The United Nations says at least 15 people died during the crackdown.
Burma's government says its security forces arrested nearly three-thousand people, but has since released all but 80 protesters. The HRW report says hundreds are still detained.
