로버트 게이츠 미국 국방장관은 5일 이라크 주재 미군의 안보 증진 성과 실사를 위해 예고 없이 이라크를 방문했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 이 날 아프가니스탄 방문을 마치고 미군 사령관들과의 회담을 위해 이라크 북부 도시 모술로 향했습니다.
죠프 모렐 미 국방부 대변인은 게이츠 장관이 3달 전 이라크 방문 이후 이라크 상황에 상당한 진전이 있었음을 직접 보고 싶어한다며 이같이 밝혔습니다.
모렐 대변인은 게이츠 장관은 누리 알 말리키 총리를 비롯해 이라크 고위 당국자들과도 만나 이라크 상황에 대한 견해를 들을 것이라고 밝혔습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is in Iraq on an unnanounced visit to assess the progress in security that has been achieved with a surge of U.S. forces in the country.
Gates flew into northern Iraqi city of Mosul for talks with U.S. commanders today (Wednesday), after ending a visit to Afghanistan.
A U.S. defense department spokesman (Geoff Morrell) said Secretary Gates wants to see for himself the considerable progress made since his last visit to the country nearly three months ago.
The spokesman said Gates will also meet with senior Iraqi leaders, including Prime minister Nouri al-Maliki, to get their view of the situation and to see what more they can do to build on the progress made so far.
