Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has begun a new five-year term in office as a civilian president.

Mr. Musharraf took the oath of office at the presidential palace today (Thursday), calling it "a milestone" in Pakistan's transition to democracy. He was sworn in a day after stepping down as army chief, ending a 46-year military career.

In his inaugural address, the Pakistani leader said the return from exile of two former prime ministers, Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif, was "good" for political reconciliation. The two were not present at the ceremony in Islamabad.

Mr. Musharraf also reaffirmed his promise to hold parliamentary elections scheduled for January eighth. As he put it "elections will be held in January come whatever may." But he did not indicate when he might lift the state of emergency imposed on November third.

Meanwhile, several lawyers and policemen were injured in clashes in the eastern city of Lahore, where police used batons to disperse 200 lawyers trying to stage a protest march against Mr. Musharraf's rule.
